About the role
About Sporometrics Sporometrics is an ISO 17025:2017 accredited microbiology laboratory specializing in environmental microbiology, indoor air quality investigations, and aerobiology. The laboratory also holds a Drug Establishment License (DEL) issued by Health Canada under the Food and Drugs Act and Regulations (Division 1) and operates in accordance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).
We are seeking a Laboratory Technician to join our laboratory team and support environmental microbiology testing, GMP product testing, research activities, and laboratory quality systems. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys hands-on laboratory work, microbiology, microscopy, and supporting both routine testing and applied research within an accredited laboratory environment. Strong time management and attention to detail skills are a must.
Key Responsibilities Laboratory Operations & Testing Set up, clean, calibrate, and maintain laboratory equipment in accordance with laboratory procedures and accreditation requirements. Prepare microbiological growth media, reagents, and laboratory supplies. Perform sample preparation, including plating, microbial culture techniques, and colony enumeration. Assist with the analysis of environmental, biological, and product samples. Conduct biological, microbiological, and biochemical analyses in support of commercial testing, quality control, and research activities. Assist with microscopic examination of environmental samples, including fungal and particulate analyses. Maintain laboratory culture collections and associated records.
Laboratory Quality & Compliance Work within laboratory quality systems compliant with ISO 17025:2017. Support laboratory activities conducted in accordance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP). Assist with documentation and quality systems required for laboratories operating under a Health Canada Drug Establishment License (DEL) and ISO 17025:2017. Maintain accurate laboratory records, worksheets, and controlled documentation. Participate (as necessary) in internal quality assurance programs, proficiency testing, audits, and accreditation activities. Assist in maintaining a clean, organized, and compliant laboratory environment.
Team Support & Professional Development Collaborate effectively with laboratory staff, analysts, and management. Participate in ongoing technical and regulatory training. Assist with training, supervision, or support of co-op students, undergraduate placements, and trainees as required.
Qualifications Skills Strong laboratory organization and documentation skills. Excellent attention to detail and commitment to quality and regulatory compliance. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a laboratory environment. Strong communication and teamwork skills. Ability to manage multiple tasks while maintaining accuracy and efficiency.
Required Completion of a two- or three-year college diploma in Biology, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Environmental Science, or a related field.
Preferred Previous laboratory experience in microbiology, environmental testing, biotechnology, or related scientific disciplines. Experience working in accredited or regulated laboratory environments (ISO 17025,GMP, AIHA LAP, etc.). Experience with microbiological culture techniques, media preparation, and microscopy. Experience supporting laboratory quality systems within an accredited or regulated environment.
Additional Information Location: Toronto, Ontario (Liberty Village), easily accessible by TTC and GO Transit.
Work Environment: Occasional overtime may be required to meet laboratory turnaround times, project deadlines, or research requirements.
