Position Overview
Under the guidance of the Indigenous Education Team and supervision of the Katarowki Learning Centre (KLC) Principal, this position is responsible for providing a range of supports to help students achieve their academic, social, physical, and personal potential. This position will entail supporting cultural programming for self-identified First Nations, Métis, and Inuit students as well as responding to the needs of students in a culturally responsive way that is rooted in Indigenous ways of assisting with behavioural supports, physical and personal care supports, life skills and experiences, communication, and academic supports, etc. In all that they do, the goal is to promote health and wellness, safety, engagement, participation, and success in school.
General Summary Of Duties And Responsibilities
Provide cultural supports to self-identified First Nation, Métis and Inuit students and the school community. Working with the classroom teacher, provide cultural supports and routines where appropriate in order to infuse Indigenous ways of knowing, doing and being into the routines of the classroom. Assist and coach students to develop the skills and abilities they need to succeed in their daily lives, including building links to the Indigenous community initiatives. Working with the Indigenous Education Team, support student engagement in learning and provide academic support especially in the area of literacy and numeracy. Promote, facilitate and model positive behaviour interventions and supports to encourage, support, reinforce and nurture appropriate and positive student behaviour and social interactions, guided by Student Safety Plans where applicable. Assist with supporting other students not assigned, as needed, to meet the needs of students as well as the needs of the school. Support up to date and complete student programming records by documenting progress on target goals and participate in parent/guardian – student meetings as appropriate. Apply de-escalation strategies, as appropriate, including use of physical restraints, as a last resort, in order to ensure student and staff safety. Perform other related tasks, including but not limited to yard and lunch supervision, assisting in the library and/or homework room. Other role related duties as assigned.
Qualifications & Required Skills
Secondary School Diploma Demonstrated knowledge of child development, including promoting the philosophy that supports and promotes the belief that every child can learn and succeed Post-secondary degree or diploma in Child & Youth Services, Behavioural Science Technology, Developmental Services, Early Childhood Education, or related field is an asset Experience working with Indigenous students as well as Indigenous members of the community and/or local Indigenous organizations First Aid, CPR and Behaviour Intervention Strategies training is an asset Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) training an asset Ability to successfully complete Behaviour Management Systems training Excellent interpersonal skills to effectively and collaboratively work as part of a team and engage with a diverse population of students with behavioural, cognitive and physical challenges as well as interact positively with staff and parents Excellent problem-solving skills and solution focused interaction in order to be responsive to students' needs Demonstrated flexibility with assignment responsibilities based on students' needs as well as the needs of the school Excellent communication skills, including documenting and record keeping as well as providing clear and professional verbal instructions/guidance Self-identified as Indigenous
