Are you someone who loves being outdoors, connecting with people, and bringing community spaces to life? The City of Medicine Hat is looking for a Program Leader to support our parks, pathways, and summer events.
In this role, you'll spend your time out in the community-supporting safe and respectful use of over 190 km of trails, connecting with residents, and helping create positive experiences at local festivals and events. Our ideal candidate:
As a Program Leader, you will be responsible for:
- Act as a friendly, visible presence across Medicine Hat's trail system.
- Promote trail etiquette, safety, and shared use awareness (cyclists, pedestrians, pets, etc.).
- Engage with trail users to answer questions, provide direction, and share information about city amenities.
- Monitor trail conditions and report maintenance or safety concerns.
- Support a welcoming and respectful environment across our parks and pathways.
- Support the setup, operation, and wrap-up of community events and festivals.
- Act as a point of contact for event participants, vendors, and attendees.
- Help coordinate on-site logistics and troubleshoot in real time.
- Represent the City in a professional, approachable way at public events.
- Assist with promoting programs, services, and upcoming activities.
What you bring:
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build positive relationships with children and adults.
- Demonstrated leadership and organizational skills to manage program delivery and keep accurate records.
- A proactive approach to problem-solving and a commitment to providing exceptional service.
- Ability to react positively to demands and unexpected changes in work priorities.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
- Proficiency in using Microsoft Office and the willingness to learn city-specific software.
- Flexibility to work mornings, evenings and weekends. However, currently we are looking specifically for evening and weekend coverage.
Qualifications:
- Successful completion of Grade 12 or high school equivalency diploma.
- Six (6) months of general experience in Parks and Recreation programming or a related field.
- Must be of minimum age (18).
- Possess and maintain a valid Class 5 Driver's License, with an acceptable driving record.
- Preference will be given to candidates with current CPR and Standard First Aid Certificate C.
- An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.
- This is a temporary position funded through the Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) program. To be eligible, applicants must:
- Be between 15 and 30 years of age; however, applicants must be a minimum of 18 years old to be eligible for this position.
- Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person with refugee protection under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of employment.
- Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada.
Additional Requirements: This position has been identified as Safety Sensitive and requires the completion of a satisfactory pre-employment drug screen. There will also be a requirement to complete a Vulnerable Sector Check and Interventions Record Check.
