At our Stratford Facility we fabricate and assemble components for heavy truck, defense and off-road equipment companies. We feature fitting and welding, metal forming, saw cutting, painting, assembly departments and manufacture everything from small components to large structures, sheet metal to heavy plate.
Position Summary
The Welding Quality Inspector is responsible for ensuring all welded products
and fabrication processes comply with customer specifications, company quality standards, applicable codes, and regulatory requirements. This position supports production through in-process and final inspections, weld audits, welder qualification and certification, training, corrective action activities, and continuous improvement initiatives.
The incumbent serves as the technical resource for welding quality by
administering AWS D1.1/CWB qualification programs, monitoring welding compliance, supporting root cause investigations, and working collaboratively with Production, Engineering, and Quality to improve product quality, reduce defects, and maintain customer satisfaction.
Primary Responsibilities
Quality Inspection & Compliance
- Perform in-process and final inspections of fabricated parts and welded assemblies.
- Inspect welds to ensure compliance with engineering drawings, customer specifications, AWS D1.1, CWB requirements, and company quality standards.
- Review drawings, welding symbols, work instructions, and welding procedures to ensure production requirements are understood and followed.
- Verify material traceability, inspection records, and certification documentation.
- Perform receiving inspection on new and suspect materials as required.
- Complete First Article Inspections (FAI), PPAP documentation, and dimensional inspections.
- Maintain inspection records, non-conformance reports, and quality documentation.
Welding Audits
- Conduct scheduled weld cell audits to verify compliance with production requirements, approved Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), quality standards, and work instructions.
- Monitor welding processes and identify opportunities to improve consistency and quality.
- Audit production processes for compliance with internal procedures and customer requirements.
- Participate in internal, customer, and third-party quality audits.
Welder Qualifications and Certifications
- Administer welder qualification and requalification programs in accordance with AWS D1.1, CWB, customer, and company requirements.
- Conduct practical welding tests for new hires and prospective welders.
- Perform D1.1 qualification testing for new employees.
- Maintain welder qualification records and monitor certification expiry dates.
- Coordinate requalification testing to ensure continuous compliance.
- Maintain qualification records for weld joints and approved welding procedures.
Training & Technical Support
- Train and coach production employees on welding procedures, quality standards, inspection requirements, and customer specifications.
- Provide technical guidance regarding weld quality, weld defects, and process improvements.
- Assist supervisors and production employees in understanding welding quality requirements.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives through education and standardized work practices.
Corrective & Preventive Actions
- Investigate welding defects, non-conformances, and customer concerns.
- Participate in root cause analysis and corrective action activities.
- Work closely with Production, Engineering, and Quality to implement permanent corrective actions.
- Monitor corrective action effectiveness and identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
- Assist in reducing scrap, rework, and warranty concerns.
Quality System Support
- Support APQP, PPAP, control plans, FMEA activities, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Assist in maintaining ISO 9001 Quality Management System requirements.
- Collect and report quality metrics including scrap, rework, internal rejects, and customer complaints.
- Support development and validation of welding fixtures, tooling, and manufacturing processes.
Administration
- Maintain accurate inspection records and certification documentation.
- Ensure welder qualification files remain current and audit ready.
- Prepare inspection, audit, and certification reports for management.
- Maintain material certifications, traceability documentation, and quality records.
- Participate in departmental meetings and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Follow all company policies, procedures, and Health & Safety requirements.
- Wear always required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Report hazards, injuries, quality concerns, and equipment deficiencies promptly.
- Maintain confidentiality of customer information and quality documentation.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Quality Manager.
Educational Requirements
- Diploma in Welding Engineering Technology, Welding Technician, Manufacturing Engineering Technology, or equivalent experience.
- CWB Level I or II Welding Inspector Certification preferred.
- CWB Welding Supervisor Certification considered a strong asset.
- Thorough knowledge of AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code – Steel.
- ISO 9001 Quality Management Systems training considered an asset.
- Lean Manufacturing or Continuous Improvement training considered an asset.
Required Skills & Expertise
- Minimum 3–5 years of experience in heavy fabrication and structural welding environments.
- Strong knowledge of AWS D1.1, CWB standards, welding procedures, and weld qualification requirements.
- Experience administering welder qualification and requalification testing.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, weld symbols, and geometric tolerancing.
- Experience conducting process audits and welding quality audits.
- Knowledge of quality systems including ISO 9001, APQP, PPAP, FMEA, and Control Plans.
- Strong understanding of root cause analysis and corrective action methodologies.
- Experience training and coaching production employees.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook).
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
- Ability to make objective quality decisions under pressure

- CMM reports and measurement documentation (where applicable)
Physical Demands
- Frequent walking throughout the manufacturing facility.
- Standing for extended periods during inspections.
- Frequent bending, kneeling, reaching, climbing, and crouching.
- Occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds.
- Manual dexterity required to operate measuring instruments and inspection equipment.
- Visual acuity to identify weld defects and verify dimensional accuracy.
- Ability to work in confined spaces or elevated work platforms when required.
