Friends of Ruby is dedicated to supporting the well-being of 2SLGBTQIA+ youth aged 16-29 through mental health services, social programs, and housing. We operate a Youth Centre, offering barrier-free counselling, hot meals, and community programming, and a Transitional Home, providing emergency and long-term housing with life-skills support. About the Role
Admin Volunteers are essential to the successful functioning of the Youth Centre and play a key role in ensuring youth have reliable access to services and support. We are seeking volunteers who can commit to a consistent schedule, as regular attendance helps maintain continuity of service and creates a welcoming, dependable environment for youth participants.
As an Admin Volunteer, you will be responsible for
Welcoming and Directing Youth: Be a friendly, non-judgmental presence, welcoming youth into the Friends of Ruby Youth Centre. Provide youth with directions to the space, service, or program they are looking for. Answer questions youth may have about our programs or services upon entry. If a youth is in need of de-escalation, direct them to the de-escalation room and inform a Friends of Ruby staff.
Receiving Packages and Deliveries
Receive all packages and scheduled donation deliveries brought to the Youth Centre. Inform relevant Friends of Ruby staff when a package or delivery has arrived for them.
Administrative Support
Manage incoming phone calls to the telephone line, including call transfers to correct staff members, reviewing voice mail messages, and providing follow up, as necessary. Support office operations and maintain inventory for donations and office supplies. Perform other administrative duties as assigned.
What You Bring
Qualifications
Experience with administrative work. Attention to detail and ability to handle confidential information. Comfortable greeting service users. Works well as a member of a team. Commitment to social justice, anti-racism, anti-oppression, housing first approach, harm reduction approach, and trauma-informed care. Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Identifies as a member of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.
Assets
Knowledge and experience in the sector. Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA) training. De-escalation training. Customer service experience or training. Why Work with Us? The Friends of Ruby Drop-In Centre at 489 Queen St. East is a welcoming and supportive space in downtown Toronto for 2SLGBTQIA+ youth aged 16-29 to create community and access free resources and services. We are open Monday to Friday from 11 AM to 6:30 PM. The Drop-In Center offers meals, supplemental groceries, activities, support groups and community. We offer barrier-free one-on-one counselling, support with gender identity and sexual orientation, and help to access housing, health care, and employment.

Friends of Ruby was founded in 2014 by Egale Canada as Egale Youth Services to meet the needs of 2SLGBQTIA+ youth in the Greater Toronto Area. In 2019, Friends of Ruby became an independent charity.
