Qualifications
MINIMUM FORMAL EDUCATION/TRAINING REQUIRED:
- PhD in geochemistry, geology, or chemistry with three years = directly-related experience.
OR
- Masters degree in related study area with five years = directly-related experience.
OR
- Bachelors degree in related study area with seven years = related experience.
EXPERIENCE:
- 10 years experience preferred.
- Experience working with chemicals and geological samples is required.
- Previous experience in laboratory work
- Experience handling toxic and hazardous chemicals
- WHMIS Certification is preferred.
- Experience related to record-keeping in a lab environment is an asset.
- Experience with gas-source mass-spectrometry and experience with the peripherals (Elemental Analyzer, Thermal Combustion.
- Elemental Analyzer, and GasBench ID) is essential.
- Excellent manual dexterity to perform the various sample processing techniques is required.
- Demonstrated ability to successfully organize a research laboratory is required.
- Must be exceptionally well organized and keep proper records.
- Knowledge of University of Manitoba systems and processes.
- The position requires attention to detail and the ability to work independently,
- An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Computer skills are required.
- Demonstrated effective communicator is required.
- Report writing is required.
- Presentation of data at national and international conferences is required.
- Experience working with fossils and rock samples is required.
- Knowledge of geological systems is required.
- A satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.
OTHER JOB RELATED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Knowledge of bench and wet chemistry
Key responsibilities
Wet chemistry lab oversight:
- Technique development for the stable isotope lab.
- Design and oversee construction of equipment not commercially available to develop techniques.
- Meet and enforce laboratory safety standards and cleanliness requirements.
- Meet the requirements of the WHMIS program in the geochemistry laboratory.
- Maintain an updated chemical inventory including MSDS sheets.
- Write reports or manuscripts and present findings at national or international conferences.
Instrument maintenance, geochemistry laboratory and stable isotope facility oversight:
- Help the stable isotope lab technician to trouble shoot and maintain operational readiness of mass-spectrometers and peripherals including calibration, replacing reagents in peripherals, cleaning ion sources in mass-spectrometers, changing filaments, and maintaining vacuum systems.
- Help maintain additional equipment in the lab such as microbalance, vacuum lines, gas lines, regulators, and air dryers
- Select and purchase small (less than $2,000.00) laboratory items.
- May be required to perform related duties not exceeding skills and capabilities as required.
