Job details
A well-established local independent grocery market is seeking a hands-on Grocery Manager to lead the day-to-day operation of the store. This is a broad leadership role for someone who enjoys being close to the business, from merchandising and inventory management to staff leadership, pricing, vendor coordination and customer experience. The Grocery Manager will take ownership of the store’s overall presentation, product availability, operating standards and profitability. Working closely with ownership, you will have the flexibility to respond quickly to customer needs, adjust the product mix, introduce new ideas and help shape how the business continues to grow. Unlike a highly structured corporate grocery environment, this role offers genuine autonomy and the opportunity to make a visible impact. You will be involved in the details of the operation, build relationships with local suppliers and customers, and help ensure the store remains relevant, competitive and connected to the community. Description Lead the day-to-day operation of the grocery store, ensuring strong standards across merchandising, inventory, service and store presentation. Ensure shelves, displays and promotional areas are clean, organized, fully stocked and visually appealing. Manage product merchandising and seasonal displays to maximize sales and profitability. Ensure products are accurately tagged, labelled and priced. Oversee grocery ordering, replenishment and inventory levels across the store. Maintain appropriate stock levels while minimizing spoilage, shrink, damages, overstock and out-of-stocks. Conduct regular inventory counts, reconciliations and shrink reviews. Coordinate product receiving and ensure incoming shipments are accurately checked and documented. Maintain accurate pricing within the POS system and throughout the store. Monitor competitor pricing and market trends to ensure the business remains competitive. Identify emerging products, customer preferences and high-demand categories and adjust the product mix accordingly. Develop and implement operational improvements that increase efficiency, sales and profitability. Work toward established store goals, budgets and performance targets. Coordinate POS and payment systems and troubleshoot routine operational issues. Support website updates, promotions and digital marketing initiatives. Maintain accurate receiving documentation, purchase orders, order logs, delivery records and vendor invoices. Reconcile invoices against purchase orders and receiving documentation. Support basic bookkeeping and administrative processes, including invoice coding and preparation of documentation for accounting. Recruit, train, schedule, coach and support store employees. Prepare weekly staff schedules and ensure appropriate coverage during peak periods. Set clear expectations for employees and promote accountability, teamwork and strong customer service. Ensure employees understand and follow workplace health and safety procedures. Foster a positive, collaborative and respectful working environment. Conduct competitive store visits and market research to understand pricing, assortment, merchandising and customer expectations. Work with ownership to develop promotions, weekly specials, seasonal campaigns and other sales-driving initiatives. Identify local events, partnerships and promotional opportunities that can help grow the business during quieter periods. Develop strategies to maximize sales during peak seasons, long weekends and key retail periods. Identify new product, merchandising and revenue opportunities across the business. Requirements Previous management experience within grocery, independent food retail, specialty food retail, farm markets or a similar environment. Strong understanding of inventory management, ordering, receiving, merchandising and pricing. Comfortable working in a hands-on environment and being actively involved in daily store operations. Proven ability to lead, schedule, train and motivate employees. Strong commercial instincts with an understanding of margins, shrink, pricing and profitability. Highly organized with strong attention to detail and administrative accuracy. Comfortable working with POS systems, spreadsheets, invoices and basic financial documentation. Ability to identify operational issues and implement practical solutions. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Customer-focused with a genuine interest in creating a welcoming neighbourhood shopping experience. Comfortable working weekends and adjusting hours during seasonal and peak business periods. Entrepreneurial mindset with the initiative to identify opportunities and move ideas forward. Corporate Culture $55,000 to $65,000 base salary, based on experience. A key leadership role within a well-established local independent grocery business. The opportunity to influence merchandising, product selection, pricing, promotions and overall store performance. Direct access to ownership and the ability to make decisions without layers of corporate approval. A community-focused environment where customer relationships and local reputation matter. The opportunity to work with local and regional suppliers and bring new products and ideas into the store. A collaborative environment built around teamwork, trust and long-term relationships. A visible role where strong performance and initiative can make a meaningful difference. Full-time position, minimum 40 hours per week, with scheduling flexibility required during peak seasons and key trading periods.
