About the Role As a Senior Software Modernization Engineer, you'll work directly with enterprise software engineering organizations to help modernize applications, improve developer productivity, accelerate platform transformations, and enable modern software delivery practices. This is a highly hands-on engineering and consulting role focused on delivering measurable outcomes. You'll partner with architects, platform teams, engineering leaders, and software developers to solve difficult technical challenges and execute modernization initiatives across large enterprise environments. Successful candidates will possess deep Java expertise, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to work directly with client stakeholders to guide modernization efforts from assessment through implementation. What You Will Do * Lead large-scale Java application modernization initiatives * Execute Java version upgrades, framework modernization, dependency remediation, and runtime migrations * Utilize automation technologies and modernization accelerators to transform enterprise applications at scale * Analyze and troubleshoot complex enterprise applications, build systems, and development environments * Improve software delivery performance through modern engineering practices and automation * Develop reusable engineering tools, accelerators, and modernization assets * Support adoption of modern DevOps and CI/CD practices * Leverage AI-assisted development tools to improve engineering productivity and modernization velocity * Partner with architects, platform teams, and engineering leadership to develop modernization strategies * Facilitate technical discovery sessions, modernization assessments, and engineering workshops * Mentor team members and contribute to Lantern's technical excellence What Success Looks Like * Deliver measurable modernization outcomes for enterprise clients * Successfully execute large-scale Java transformation initiatives * Build credibility with engineering leaders, architects, and software developers * Improve developer productivity through modernization and automation * Solve complex technical challenges independently * Develop reusable accelerators that increase delivery efficiency * Contribute to successful client outcomes through strong technical leadership * Continuously learn and adapt to evolving engineering tools and technologies Required Qualifications * 5+ years of software engineering, technical consulting, platform engineering, or related experience • Strong Java and JVM ecosystem expertise • Deep experience with Maven, Gradle, dependency management, enterprise application troubleshooting, and build/release processes • Experience working with large, complex codebases • Experience with Jenkins, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI/CD, Azure DevOps, or similar platforms • Familiarity with Artifactory, Nexus, or similar artifact repositories • Experience using AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude Code, or similar solutions • Strong communication and customer-facing skills • Ability to communicate effectively with both technical and business stakeholders Preferred Qualifications * OpenRewriteexperience • Large-scale application modernization programs • Java version migrations (Java 8 to Java 17+) • Application security remediation initiatives • SonarQube, Checkmarx, or similar code quality platforms • Microsoft Azure • C#/.NET, Python, JavaScript, or TypeScript • Experience with large-scale automated code transformation tools Lantern is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. The salary pay range is subject to change and may be modified at any time. Colorado Salary Range $120,000—$170,000 USD Lantern is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices.
