Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Tennessee

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville grants Bachelor of Science (BS), Master of Science (MS) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees. Our undergraduate program provides students with the personalized touch of a "small program in a big university". Every undergraduate student, whether their goal is to enter industry or graduate school, has the opportunity to embed themselves in a faculty member's research group. This hands-on experience provides regular face time with a faculty mentor, instilling technical and professional skills crucial for success in both industry and graduate school. Our graduate program trains students entering from many different disciplines (MSE, Physics, Mechanical Engineering and more) to perform cutting edge materials research. Because of our close proximity to Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), the Department of Energy's premier materials laboratory, many faculty have extensive collaborations with ORNL staff scientists. Graduate students pursue materials discovery using state-of-the-art synthesis and characterization equipment at the UT Institute for Materials and Manufacturing (IAMM). Faculty expertise exists in both functional and structural materials using an integrated combination of experimental and computational tools. MSE faculty are integral members of the Center for Advanced Materials and Manufacturing (CAMM), a Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC) sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF) at UT.
