Position Overview Registered Practical Nurses possess a defined body of knowledge, clinical skills, procedural skills and professional attitudes, which are directed to effective patient and family-centered care. RPNs apply these competencies to collect and interpret information, make appropriate nursing clinical decisions, and carry out therapeutic nursing interventions. In collaboration with the Registered Nurse, RPNs apply these competencies within the boundaries of their knowledge, skill and judgment, personal expertise, the healthcare setting and the patient's preferences. The role is guided by codes of ethics and a commitment to clinical competence, their care is characterized by up-to-date, resource-efficient clinical practice as well as with effective communication in partnership with patients and families and other health care providers. Education Registered Practical Nursing Diploma with current certificate of registration issued by the College of Nurses of Ontario. Current BCLS certification. Medication Administration Certificate (for RPN) required. Completion of physical assessment course or a willingness to complete within 6 months of obtaining position. Experience 2 years surgical experience (within the last 3 years) required. Demonstrated ability in IV initiation, and venopuncture preferred. Knowledge of PCA and pain management an asset. Knowledge of current techniques in wound-care an asset. Knowledge of adult learning principles required. Maintains competence relative to current practices. Demonstrated excellence in the provision of patient focused care. Excellent organizational, communication, observational and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to work within a team setting. Motivated to pursue educational goals. Good work and attendance record required. Requirements
Requires a Registered Practical Nursing diploma, current College of Nurses of Ontario registration, current BCLS certification, and an RPN Medication Administration Certificate; a physical assessment course must be completed or undertaken within six months of starting. Requires two years of recent surgical experience, strong communication and teamwork skills, and the ability to work across areas of the Surgery Health Service; IV initiation and venipuncture are preferred.
