One of the country's largest financial technology companies is searching for an intermediate level Backend Software Engineer to join their Platform Engineering team on a hybrid basis at their Canadian headquarters in downtown Toronto. In this role, you will build cutting-edge backend infrastructure for internal and customer facing chatbot solutions through conversational AI routing and high-scale data layers that connect enterprise applications to state-of-the-art LLMs. You will drive core backend architecture, shaping the systems that power responsive, intelligent conversational experiences across massive user bases. This exciting opportunity to develop and scale mission-critical conversational AI infrastructure begins as an 8-month T4 contract with strong extension potential, operating on a hybrid schedule (3 days onsite per week) in downtown Toronto, ON. You will collaborate within an innovative, low-ego engineering environment with ample opportunity for professional advancement, and you will be fully integrated with the team enjoying certain contractor perks including paid holidays. Responsibilities Focus entirely on core backend platform and data architecture, with zero client-side or frontend responsibilities. Architect and develop high-throughput Java and Kotlin microservices that orchestrate requests between front-end interfaces and LLM/AI services. Manage routing and persistence layers for intelligent conversational workflows and internal expert assistance tools. Design and maintain resilient, production-ready relational database schemas to store dialogue histories and operational data at massive enterprise scale. Collaborate across multidisciplinary teams in a fast-paced DevOps environment, taking end-to-end ownership from technical design to production deployment. Skills & Experience Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical work experience. 5+ years of professional backend software development experience, primarily in Java. Hands-on experience developing services in Kotlin (or strong desire and ability to work with Kotlin microservices). Solid proficiency with relational database systems (RDBMS) and SQL design for structured, scalable data storage. Proven track record delivering high-volume, mission-critical production platform services with an emphasis on low latency and reliability. Self-driven problem solver with strong ownership, capable of thriving in collaborative, low-ego enterprise engineering teams without requiring hand-holding. Preferred Qualifications Prior experience working within platform engineering or foundational infrastructure teams. Direct background integrating large language models (LLMs) or building conversational AI runtime and orchestration systems. Deep expertise in service discovery, API gateway design, and cloud-native microservice architecture.
