Job details

Job Title: Azure File Share & NetApp SMB Engineer Experience: 5–10+ Years Location: Remote Employment Type: Contract/Project base (hourly) Department: Cloud Infrastructure / Storage Engineering Job Summary We are seeking an experienced Azure File Share & NetApp SMB Engineer with strong expertise in Microsoft Azure storage services, Azure Files, Azure NetApp Files (ANF), and Server Message Block (SMB) protocols. The ideal candidate will be responsible for designing, implementing, migrating, managing, and troubleshooting enterprise file storage solutions across Azure cloud and hybrid infrastructure environments. The role requires hands-on experience with NetApp ONTAP, SMB/CIFS file sharing, Active Directory integration, storage performance optimization, and enterprise-scale file share migrations. Key Responsibilities 1. Azure File Share Administration Design, deploy, configure, and manage Azure Files and Azure NetApp Files solutions. Configure SMB-based file shares for enterprise applications and Windows workloads. Implement Azure Storage Accounts, file shares, private endpoints, and secure network connectivity. Configure identity-based authentication using Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) and Microsoft Entra Kerberos where supported. Manage NTFS permissions, share-level access, and role-based access control (RBAC). Monitor storage capacity, performance, availability, and utilization. 2. NetApp Storage & SMB Management Administer NetApp ONTAP storage environments supporting SMB/CIFS workloads. Configure and manage NetApp Storage Virtual Machines (SVMs), volumes, shares, and export configurations. Manage SMB 2.x/3.x protocols, authentication, permissions, and access control. Troubleshoot SMB connectivity, latency, authentication, and file locking issues. Configure NetApp snapshots, replication, and data protection policies. Support hybrid storage environments integrating NetApp ONTAP with Azure services. 3. File Share Migration & Modernization Plan and execute migrations from on-premises Windows File Servers and NetApp SMB shares to Azure Files or Azure NetApp Files. Use migration tools such as Robocopy, AzCopy (where supported), Azure Storage Mover, and NetApp migration utilities. Preserve NTFS ACLs, file ownership, permissions, and directory structures during migration. Conduct migration assessments, capacity planning, performance testing, and validation. Minimize downtime and ensure data integrity during production cutovers. 4. SMB Protocol & Active Directory Integration Demonstrate strong knowledge of SMB 2.0, SMB 3.x, Kerberos, and NTLM authentication. Configure domain-joined SMB file services and Active Directory integration. Troubleshoot DNS, authentication, network connectivity, and access-denied issues. Manage share permissions, NTFS ACLs, and security group access. Understand SMB encryption, signing, multichannel capabilities, and protocol compatibility. 5. Performance, Security & Troubleshooting Diagnose storage latency, throughput, IOPS, and SMB performance bottlenecks. Configure private endpoints, VPN, ExpressRoute, and firewall rules for secure access. Implement backup, snapshots, disaster recovery, and business continuity solutions. Troubleshoot Azure Files and NetApp storage incidents using Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, and NetApp monitoring tools. Apply security best practices, including least-privilege access and encryption. 6. Automation & Operational Support Automate Azure storage provisioning and administration using PowerShell, Azure CLI, Terraform, or Bicep. Develop scripts for file share management, permission auditing, and storage monitoring. Provide L2/L3 operational support for enterprise storage environments. Create technical documentation, architecture diagrams, operational runbooks, and migration procedures. Collaborate with cloud architects, Windows Server teams, network engineers, and cybersecurity teams. Required Technical Skills 5+ years of experience in enterprise infrastructure, storage engineering, or Windows file services. Strong hands-on experience with Azure Files and Azure NetApp Files (ANF). Experience administering NetApp ONTAP and SMB/CIFS file shares. Strong understanding of SMB 2.x/3.x protocols and Windows file sharing. Experience with Active Directory, Kerberos, DNS, NTFS permissions, and ACL management. Experience migrating NetApp or Windows file shares to Azure. Knowledge of Azure networking, private endpoints, VPN, and ExpressRoute. Experience with PowerShell scripting and Azure storage automation. Strong troubleshooting skills involving file share access, storage performance, and authentication. Preferred Qualifications Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate (AZ-104). Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert (AZ-305). NetApp Certified Data Administrator (NCDA) or equivalent experience. Experience with Azure File Sync and hybrid file server architectures. Experience with NetApp SnapMirror, snapshots, and disaster recovery. Familiarity with enterprise storage migration methodologies. Experience supporting large-scale enterprise file share environments. Key Deliverables Reliable, secure, and scalable Azure SMB file share infrastructure. Successful migration of on-premises NetApp SMB shares to Azure. Optimized storage performance and availability. Accurate migration of NTFS permissions and access controls. Documented operational procedures and troubleshooting runbooks. Reduced storage incidents and improved infrastructure efficiency.
