Deck Hand

Job Status: Summer Seasonal Hours of Work: up to 40 hours, days, evenings and weekends based on operational needs Wage Rate: $30.00/hour Vacancy: New position Closing Date: open until filled Position Summary: The Seasonal Deck Hand works under the direct supervision of the Waterfront Manager, with direction from the Seasonal Propwash Operator. Primary duties include assisting with the safe operation of municipal vessels to conduct prop washing activities as needed, regularly checking depth of channel to assess prop washing needs, and conducting regular cleaning and light maintenance of the vessels. Duties are required at both the Port Franks and Grand Bend Marina. Primary Duties: * Assisting Propwash Operator in prop washing operations. * Follow safe operating procedures of the vessel. * Assist with deploying and removing channel and swim area markers. * Conduct regular maintenance and upkeep of the hull, decks, superstructures, spuds and towing gear. * Conduct regular soundings to monitor channel depths. * Ensure life saving and firefighting equipment is properly inspected and maintained. * Assist with preparing and submitting logbooks, daily records, and maintenance records. * Preforms other duties as assigned Education Requirements and Skills: * Marine Emergency Duties Domestic Vessel Safety or Greater * Small Vessel Operator Proficiency is an asset * Marine Basic First Aid * Valid Marine Medical * Restricted Operator Certificate Maritime (ROC-M) * Previous tugboat experience is an asset * Strong communication and teamwork skills. Experience / Work Complexity: * Working conditions are primarily outdoors. * Hours include daytime, weekends, and evenings. * Must always adhere to all health and safety practices. * Assist the operating of large and small vessels as well as small equipment.

Assists in the safe operation of municipal vessels for prop washing and monitors channel depths. Responsible for the regular cleaning, light maintenance, and upkeep of vessel hulls and equipment.

Requires certifications in Marine Emergency Duties, Marine Basic First Aid, a valid Marine Medical, and ROC-M. Previous tugboat experience and Small Vessel Operator Proficiency are considered assets.
