Position Summary The Equipment Operator / Backhoe Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of heavy equipment in support of underground utility construction, including hydro and telecommunications work. This role is performed in accordance with project specifications, safety regulations, and the applicable collective agreement. Key Responsibilities * Operate backhoe and related equipment for trenching, excavation, backfilling, and site preparation * Safely expose and work around existing underground utilities * Interpret locates, drawings, and grade requirements * Perform daily equipment inspections and basic maintenance * Work collaboratively with crew members and follow direction from supervision * Maintain compliance with all health, safety, and environmental requirements * Support general site operations as required within classification * Deliver projects with predictable financial outcomes and strong margins. Required Skills, Qualifications and Experience: * Minimum 3+ years’ experience operating backhoe in utility construction * Valid Ontario Driver’s License (DZ/AZ considered an asset) * Strong knowledge of underground utility practices and safe digging procedures * Ability to read and understand utility locates and construction drawings * Experience working around live utilities preferred * Criminal background check is required Physical Demands: Must be able to perform the physical demands of the position’s work tasks. These include but not limited to: * Working outdoors and in confined spaces * Moving equipment and/or materials * Frequent climbing and frequent lifting * Must be able to safely lift loads of 50 lbs. * Standing for extended periods of time * Working in all weather conditions (cold, heat, rain, snow, wind etc.) Other Success Factors: * Strong safety awareness and knowledge of applicable safety rules and regulations * Demonstrates quality work that is well planned and completed accurately * Ability to adapt to changing volumes and pace of work * Strong time management and organization skills to ensure that deadlines are met, and work is delivered * Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills * Strong verbal and written communication skills * Displays a keen attention to detail * Is a highly engaged and motivated team player * Ability to solve problems with varying degrees of complexity * Is self-motivated, with the ability to work independently * Excellent attendance and safety record We confirm that AI is not used in screening of candidates and this posting is for an existing vacancy.
