Job Description What is the opportunity? The Director, Accounting Policy is a key leader within RBC's Chief Accountant's Group, responsible for developing, disseminating, and maintaining corporate accounting policies while advising stakeholders across the enterprise on IFRS and U.S. GAAP applications. This high-profile role offers the opportunity to build technical and leadership skills, develop strong cross-Bank relationships, and gain insight into RBC's significant business issues. The Accounting Policy function serves as a trusted business advisor, providing strategic guidance on complex accounting issues, driving policy operationalization, structuring transactions to optimize results, and contributing to industry advocacy. You'll also play a key role in communicating RBC's financial results through quarterly and annual reporting to shareholders. You're an ideal fit if you have experience navigating complex business issues with multiple stakeholders, strong analytical skills, the ability to shift between detailed investigation and big-picture thinking, and can communicate sophisticated accounting concepts clearly to senior executives. What will you do? Lead the review and provide accounting advisory services to internal stakeholders across RBC by advising on complex accounting issues and business unit transactions, including special projects, and working with key stakeholders to ensure conclusions are consistent with our corporate accounting policies. Develop and maintain RBC’s corporate accounting policies in accordance with IFRS and U.S. GAAP. Support our quarterly external reporting process as a key member of the team in managing the preparation and delivery of critical elements of our reporting, including reviewing and drafting certain quarterly and annual disclosures, and partnering with key stakeholders to ensure the accuracy and quality of our disclosures. Lead project work to ensure the impact of new and amended accounting standards is well understood by stakeholders across the Bank, fully communicated to affected business units and senior finance executives and well documented to support Accounting Policy Group’s conclusion/position in line with control and governance requirements. Shape future accounting and disclosure requirements by supporting advocacy efforts on accounting-related issues, including providing comments on new Discussion Papers or Exposure Drafts issued by accounting and regulatory bodies. Liaise with industry peers on accounting matters as needed through industry associations (e.g., Canadian Bankers Association). Liaise with the external and internal auditors on financial accounting and reporting policy issues, as needed. Effectively tell the RBC story in the Audit Committee materials for senior finance executives with a business lens, focusing on key judgment areas. Coordinate with various stakeholders, including Investor Relations, Performance Management, Corporate Treasury, Chief Controls Office and Group Risk Management, among others, to incorporate key updates on financial performance, reporting and disclosures, market insights and finance projects with a focus on elevating and highlighting the role of finance. Complete Auditor Independence activities in partnership with HR, and other business partners on an as needed basis. Contribute to a collaborative, team-first environment and bring your unique perspective and curiosity to set ambitious goals and drive process improvement initiatives across the Chief Accountant’s Group to challenge the status quo. What do you need to succeed? Must-have Chartered Professional Accountant designation. 7+ years of working experience in a financial services and/or accounting policy or similar role, with a strong technical background in IFRS. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively to executives, presenting accounting items in a commercial context. Strong analytical, organizational and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and lead independently, while knowing when to escalate and ask for support. Curiosity to learn new ways to do things, willingness to challenge the status quo, and ability to drive process improvements and efficiencies. Strong interpersonal skills; specifically, able to act as change agent, facilitator and collaborator. Nice-to-have Previous banking experience is highly desirable. Strong understanding of financial institutions’ disclosure requirements is highly desirable. Working knowledge of current U.S. GAAP is highly desirable. What’s in it for you?
