Job details

Job Type: Full-time Location: Remote, Western Canada Salary: Starting at $80,000 CAD annually, with higher compensation based on experience Shape the Future of EWP Design at RAS Ron Anderson & Sons (RAS) is looking for an experienced Senior EWP Designer with deep, hands-on experience designing engineered wood floor systems and floor panels using MiTek. This is not an entry-level or general drafting position. We are looking for an experienced designer who can take ownership of complex residential and multi-family projects, identify problems before they reach production or site, and develop practical, buildable solutions. You will work directly with engineers, contractors, our design team, and our in-house fabrication operation, taking projects from initial design through coordinated, production-ready EWP floor packages. For the right designer, this is an opportunity to have a real influence on how EWP design, prefabrication, and construction come together. About RAS Founded in 1994, RAS specializes in multi-family and residential wood-frame construction on Vancouver Island. Our in-house design department connects EWP design directly with prefabrication and field installation. Our engineered wood floor panels are designed and manufactured in-house, giving our designers direct exposure to how their designs are fabricated and installed. We are looking for someone who brings strong technical experience and can help us continue improving how we design, coordinate, and manufacture EWP systems. What You'll Be Doing * Design engineered wood floor systems and floor panels using MiTek Supply Suite * Design I-joists, beams, columns, connectors, and associated EWP components * Develop coordinated, accurate, and production-ready floor layouts * Review architectural and structural drawings and correctly interpret loads and framing requirements * Identify missing information, design conflicts, load-path issues, and coordination problems before they reach fabrication or site * Develop practical design solutions and recognize when engineering clarification or review is required * Prepare layouts, calculations, material takeoffs, and design documentation * Coordinate with engineers, architects, consultants, contractors, fabrication, and project teams * Manage RFIs, design revisions, drawing changes, and project deadlines * Apply value engineering and practical framing knowledge to improve constructability and material efficiency * Contribute to improvements in RAS design standards, EWP workflows, and prefabrication processes What We're Looking For These are the core requirements for this position: * Minimum 5 years of recent, hands-on MiTek design experience * Demonstrated experience using MiTek for engineered wood floor design, not primarily roof-truss design * Strong floor-panel design experience * Recent experience actively designing EWP systems * Strong working knowledge of I-joists, LVL/beams, columns, connectors, loads, and wood-frame construction * Good understanding of wood engineering and structural principles * Strong ability to read and interpret both architectural and structural drawings * Ability to identify design conflicts, missing information, and constructability issues independently * Sound technical judgment and the ability to recognize when engineering review is required * Experience taking projects from initial layout through final production-ready design * Ability to manage multiple projects and work independently in a remote environment * Strong written and verbal English communication skills * Located in Western Canada Additional Experience We'd Value * Multi-family and mid-rise wood-frame construction * Prefabricated or panelized floor systems * Experience coordinating directly with fabrication or manufacturing * Field framing or construction experience * Value engineering and material optimization * Experience working directly with structural engineers * Experience with Javelin, iStruct, BC Calc, AutoCAD, Bluebeam, or similar design tools in addition to MiTek * Engineering Technology, Architectural Technology, or related technical education Why Join RAS? * See your designs built: Work directly with the team fabricating and installing the systems you design. * Work on challenging projects: Design EWP systems for multi-family and mid-rise wood-frame construction. * Have technical ownership: This is not simply a drafting or layout position. We want experienced designers who can solve problems. * Influence how we work: Help improve our design standards, workflows, coordination, and prefabrication processes. * Remote flexibility: Work remotely from Western Canada while remaining closely connected to design and production. Compensation and Benefits * Starting at $80,000 CAD annually, with higher compensation based on experience and technical expertise * Extended health and dental coverage * Life insurance * Paid time off * Flexible schedule * Remote work from Western Canada How to Apply If you have strong MiTek EWP floor and floor-panel design experience and enjoy solving complex wood-frame design problems, we'd like to hear from you.
