Gitksen West Secondary School is a brand-new, state-of-the-art high school serving the Gitwangak, Gitsegukla and Gitanyow First Nations. We provide a safe, inclusive, and culturally rich learning environment that blends academic excellence with Sim'algya x and Gitksen language, culture, and traditions. We are seeking a passionate and culturally responsive Teacher****Librarian to help build and lead our Learning Commons.
PositionSummary
This role blends teaching, literacy leadership, and library administration in a vibrant, culturally grounded school setting. The Teacher Librarian is responsible for developing and managing a dynamic Learning Commons that supports literacy, research, inquiry-based learning, and student achievement.
The successful candidate will collaborate with staff to integrate information literacy, digital citizenship, and culturally responsive resources into classroom instruction. A key priority is ensuring the Learning Commons reflects and supports Sim'algyax language, Gitksen culture, and land-based education.
KeyResponsibilities
- Develop and maintain an organized, welcoming, and inclusive Learning Commons.
- Build and manage a diverse collection of print and digital resources aligned with the B.C. Curriculum.
- Prioritize Indigenous-authored and culturally relevant materials.
- Collaborate with teachers to support research, project-based learning, and inquiry projects.
- Teach information literacy, digital citizenship, and research skills.
- Promote reading engagement and school-wide literacy initiatives.
- Support the integration of educational technology and digital resources.
- Participate in staff meetings, professional development, and school committees.
Qualifications****
- Bachelor of Education with valid B.C. Teacher Certification.
- Teacher Librarian qualifications or coursework in Library Studies.
- Minimum two (2) years teaching experience (experience in a First Nations school preferred).
- Demonstrated ability to incorporate Indigenous language and culture into programming.
- Strong knowledge of the B.C. Curriculum, inquiry-based learning, and 21st-century teaching practices.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and collaboration skills.
- Clear Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening.
Salary******& ******Benefits: GWSSS provides its employees with a competitive salary (based on SD82 wage grid) dependent on category and years of experience (ie. Cat. 5+ with 5 years of experience: $79,364), moving loan subsidy, and full group health benefits, including pension, life insurance, and dental coverage.
