POSITION DESCRIPTION Position: Barista Reports To: Kitchen Supervisor & Food & Beverage Manager Last Updated: August 2026 Qualifications: A full time or part-time fee-paying student Location: Mississauga Campus Term: August 2026 – April 2027 Salary Range: $17.87 Hours: 10-15 hours per week This posting is for an existing vacancy GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES Baristas are responsible for the preparation and serving of all food and beverages in the Bruin Coffee House – Mississauga/Brampton/Oakville, as well as stocking, rotating, and prep of raw materials and menu items. Baristas may also be asked to help with catering events and additional prep tasks. They are required to keep a clean and organized station, keep the dish area tidy and sanitary, and to perform daily and weekly cleaning tasks. Baristas will be expected to demonstrate menu, recipe, and general product knowledge and participate in staff contests and food features or themes. They will also be expected to provide excellent customer service, greet guests enthusiastically, and handle debit/credit/ one card transactions appropriately. ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE The Barista reports to the Kitchen Supervisor, Food & Beverage Managers, or supervisor on duty at their respective campus of employment. Baristas must possess strong communication and interpersonal skills to ensure a high level of satisfaction among all customers, employees and all other groups and clients. This must be done in accordance with all hospitality & operations staff as a whole. SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES The functions of Baristas cover a wide variety of responsibilities in the daily operations of the SSU hospitality & facilities and may be modified from time to time by the management team. It is important to note that not all functions and duties are contained within this definition, and the position itself should be ever changing and adaptive. Nevertheless, specific roles and responsibilities allocated to this position include, but are not limited to the following: Ensuring all menu items are prepared timely and served according to standards. Keep a clean and organized work area at all times. Uphold food safety standards, and ensure a safe, quality product is always being served. Maintain consistent, efficient service during peak times. Perform daily and weekly cleaning tasks as prescribed by the management team. Keep dish area, staff areas, and food storage area clean and organized. Remove garbage, organic, and recycling items efficiently and safely & dispose in the proper allocated areas. Be mindful of personal appearance and outlet appearance at all times – this includes keeping hair tied or covered, wearing gloves, and washing hands thoroughly after handling cash, switching tasks, before and after eating, using bathroom and after sneezing or coughing Ring in orders as necessary into the point of sale system and adhere to proper cash handling processes. Food Safety certification Level 1 (training & certification arranged through the SSU).
