Job summary
Job Title: Senior Engineer, Data Plane Location: Fully Remote (Need to reside in Greater Vancouver BC, Canada) Visa: Can sponsor work-permit and PR in Canada Compensation (commensurate with experience/profile): $140K-$160K CAD annual, plus equity commensurate with experience and expected impact. Benefits: Access to company offered medical insurance plan and 401(K) in the US Level: Sr Engineer Reports To: Principal Engineer Must Include LinkedIn Profile and Resume in the application. Location: Vancouver BC (visa and permanent resident sponsorship available) or Seattle WA (US GC holder or Citizen only) About SmartVerify SmartVerify is the data security and compliance layer for enterprise AI. We sit inline between AI agents and the data they query, inspecting every interaction, enforcing policy, and producing the audit trail that maps to TRAIGA, the Colorado AI Act, California DROP, and the EU AI Act. We are a small, technical team building infrastructure that enterprise security teams and regulators will rely on. The Role You will own the hot path. Every query an AI agent sends to a customer database passes through code you write and maintain. This is the most latency-sensitive and security-critical layer in the product consisting of Envoy proxy, Rust WASM filter, the Redis score cache, the Bloom filter consent enforcement, and the response-side redaction layer. This is not an application development role. It is a systems engineering role for someone who thinks carefully about microseconds, memory layout, and failure modes, and who wants that work to matter for data privacy and AI governance. What You Will Build The Request Interceptor is the core deliverable. It is a Rust WASM filter that runs inside Envoy on every query: capturing metadata, computing risk signals from query structure, building the cache fingerprint, publishing the SNS event, and applying response-side redaction when policy requires it. It must be fast, correct, and observable. You will build and use P50/P90/P99 latency instrumentation on the hot path, Redis hit rate, Bloom filter performance. What the Stack Looks Like *** Envoy proxy with WASM filter extensions (Rust, proxy-wasm SDK) AWS stack, ECS/EKS for deployment, Terraform for infra DistilBERT on AWS Inferentia for the async ML classifier (you consume its Redis output; the ML infra is owned by the Principal Engineer) What You Bring Required: Strong systems programming experience. Rust or C++ for performance-critical paths, with real production experience at the layer where latency is measured in microseconds not milliseconds. Familiarity with Envoy - filter chains, xDS protocol, the WASM SDK, and the operational reality of running Envoy in production at scale Experience with proxy or network programming patterns: buffer management, streaming response handling, connection multiplexing Solid understanding of AWS networking fundamentals Comfort with the full observability stack: you instrument what you build, you own the latency numbers, and you can diagnose a P99 spike from first principles Strongly preferred: Rust experience Experience with the proxy-wasm ABI and its constraints Familiarity with SPIFFE/SPIRE or similar workload identity systems is desirable Prior work in security-adjacent infrastructure eg DLP, CASB, WAF, network security tooling, or in data-intensive systems Understanding of Redis data structures and TTL semantics at the level of designing a cache key strategy for a multi-tenant system Why Join SmartVerify? Solve Hard Problems: This isn't a standard REST API role. You are solving problems related to distributed state, latency, and grid computing. AI-Ready Security: You are building the infrastructure that will enable enterprises to safely adopt the next generation of AI tools. Architectural Ownership: You will define how our Control Plane scales from Day 1 to Day 1,000. Equity upside: the role will be compensated with equity that is commensurate with value creation from solving hard technical problems. Remote-first team. Flexible schedule. PR Sponsorship in Canada. Access to company offered medical insurance plan and 401(K) in the US To apply: Upload your resume Include your linkedin profile Include your answers to the questions below Are you willing to relocate to Canada? Or Seattle, USA (if no visa sponsorship needed)? * Yes No How many years of experience do you have in Envoy Proxy/ xDS stack? 0 1-3 4+
