Job summary

In this role, the Labourer supports field and shop maintenance, repair, assembly, and project activities for mining equipment and associated work scopes. This position plays a key support role to Heavy Equipment Technicians, Apprentices, Welders, and Supervisors while developing foundational mechanical skills in a mining environment. This role is intended for individuals interested in pursuing a Heavy Equipment Technician apprenticeship and building a long-term career with SMS Equipment Base Wage: $30.27 per hour. Additional premiums apply. Location: Acheson, AB. Schedule: 7x7 (day shift primarily: night shift may occasionally be required) What You’ll Do * Support Heavy Equipment Technicians, Apprentices, and Welders with maintenance and repair activities * Equipment cleaning, preparation, teardown, and reassembly * Parts handling, tooling setup, material movement, and shop support activities * Site setup, mobilization, and demobilization activities * Mechanical repairs and maintenance as required under the direction of qualified tradespeople * Maintain a safe and organized work environment * Complete assigned tasks in accordance with SMS Equipment safety and quality standards * Support project and outage work in both shop and field environments What You Bring * High school diploma or equivalent * Mechanical aptitude and a strong interest in heavy equipment * Positive attitude and willingness to learn * Team-oriented approach with strong communication skills * Strong work ethic and commitment to safety * Ability to work in demanding shop and field environments * Valid class 5 driver's license Work Environment * Work is primarily based out of Acheson, AB but frequent travel to customer sites and remote locations is required. * Out-of-town work, hotel accommodations, and camp-based assignments required as needed * Long shifts (12+ hours) in physically and mentally demanding conditions This role may involve working closely with the same crew for extended periods including full shifts, travel days, meals, and time in camp. Successful candidates will be coachable, adaptable, eager to learn, and able to quickly become part of the strong team culture. This position is classified as an Individual Contributor role in SMS Equipment’s competency framework, requiring demonstration of core competencies (customer focus, collaboration, and technical/functional expertise).
