Draftsman Job Family: Engineers/Professionals Division: Development Terms of Employment: At will termination FLSA Status: Exempt Pay Grade: 100 Reports to: Director of Engineering Position Summary The Draftsman is responsible for producing accurate engineering drawings, construction plans, permit exhibits, as-built documentation, standard details, and technical illustrations supporting SOL Fiber's telecommunications infrastructure projects. The position works under the direction of the Director of Engineering and collaborates closely with interdepartmental personnel to develop complete design packages for long-haul fiber, ILA’s, wireless, and facilities projects. The Draftsman ensures that all drawings conform to company drafting standards, engineering specifications, applicable codes, client requirements, and regulatory agency requirements while maintaining strict document revision control. Essential Duties and Responsibilities This list of Essential Duties and Responsibilities is not exhaustive and may be supplemented. 1. Prepare detailed engineering drawings using AutoCAD Civil 3D and other approved CAD software. 2. Produce construction plan sets for underground telecommunications infrastructure including conduit layouts, bore profiles, utility vaults, splice locations, fiber routes, and associated civil improvements. 3. Develop permit exhibits for county, municipal, state, railroad, utility, and federal permitting agencies. 4. Prepare right-of-way exhibits, easement drawings, crossing details, and construction details. 5. Maintain drawing revisions, document control, and engineering record archives. 6. Coordinate with engineering staff to incorporate survey information, GIS data, utility locates, and field verification into final drawings. 7. Prepare as-built drawings from construction redlines and field data. 8. Assist in developing standard engineering details, drafting standards, title blocks, and drawing templates. 9. Coordinate with GIS personnel to ensure consistency between CAD drawings and enterprise mapping systems. 10. Generate bill of materials from engineering drawings when required. 11. Assist project managers with drawing revisions during construction. 12. Ensure all drawings comply with SOL Fiber engineering standards and applicable local, state, and federal requirements. 13. Support engineering estimates by preparing preliminary layouts and conceptual drawings. 14. Participate in engineering design reviews and quality assurance/quality control processes. 15. Perform additional duties as assigned. Distinguishing Characteristics The Draftsman provides the technical drafting foundation for engineering projects by transforming engineering concepts, survey information, and field data into complete construction-ready documentation. Unlike engineering positions that are primarily responsible for engineering calculations and design decisions, the Draftsman focuses on producing accurate, consistent, and highly detailed construction documentation while maintaining drafting standards and document quality across the organization. Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD and AutoCAD Civil 3D. 2. Working knowledge of ArcGIS Pro and GIS mapping concepts. 3. Understanding of telecommunications outside plant construction methods. 4. Knowledge of underground utility design and construction practices. 5. Ability to interpret engineering calculations, specifications, and survey information. 6. Strong understanding of engineering drawing standards and drafting conventions. 7. Excellent organizational and document management skills. 8. Ability to manage multiple projects while meeting deadlines. 9. Strong written and verbal communication skills. 10. High attention to detail with exceptional drafting accuracy. 11. Ability to identify discrepancies before construction. 12. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications. 13. Ability to learn ERPNext document workflows and engineering documentation processes. 14. Ability to work independently and collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams. 15. Commitment to continuous process improvement and drafting standardization. Position Requirements Education, Training, and Experience 1. High school graduation, General Education Development (GED), foreign equivalency, or two years working. 2. Minimum two years of professional drafting experience using AutoCAD. 3. Telecommunications, civil engineering, utility, or infrastructure drafting experience preferred. 4. Experience producing construction plan sets and permit drawings preferred. Licenses and Certifications 1. A valid driver’s license that allows the employee to legally operate a motor vehicle in the United States. License must be maintained for the duration of the assignment. 2. Must obtain OSHA 10 Hour General Industry within 30 days of hire. 3. Must possess Basic Life Support certification within 30 days of hire and must be maintained for the duration of the assignment. 4. Must possess an ATSSA (American Traffic Safety Services Association) TCS (Traffic Control Supervisor) within 180 days of hire and must be maintained for the duration of the assignment, at the expense of the company. 5. Must complete all assigned training courses within the company’s LMS (Learning Management System) within 30 days of hire. Preferred Qualifications 1. Experience with telecommunications engineering. 2. Experience producing utility permit packages. 3. Working knowledge of fiber optic infrastructure. 4. Familiarity with ERPNext. 5. Familiarity with NetBox. 6. Experience with Survey123 and field data collection. 7. Experience with project document control systems. 8. Knowledge of AASHTO, MUTCD, utility accommodations, and ROW requirements. Documents Required at Time of Hire 1. Proof of Citizenship 2. A copy motor vehicle record issued within 30 days of hire by the Department of Motor Vehicles or such agency 3. Valid USDOT Physical Card Examples of Assigned Work Aeras SOL Fiber and client facilities – Point Of Presence Sites (POPS), data centers, central offices, offices, schools, libraries, building rooftops, chase-ways, Right Of Ways (ROW), etc. Work Environment Strength: Medium/heavy exert force of 50-100 lbs., occasionally; 25-50 lbs., frequently; 10-20 lbs., constantly. Physical Demand: Frequent sitting, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, stooping, kneeling, climbing, crouching, reaching, handling, and repetitive fine motor activities. Mobility to work in a typical office setting and use standard office equipment. Stamina to remain seated and maintain concentration for an extended period of time. Hearing and speech to communicate in person, via video conference and computers, or over the telephone. Vision: Frequent near/far acuity and color vision. Vision to read printed and online materials, Video Display Terminal (VDT) screens, or other monitoring devices. Environmental Conditions: Varies from climate-controlled office settings to work outdoors with temperatures ranging from mild/moderate to extreme cold/heat. Exposure to noise levels ranging from moderate to loud for occasional to frequent time periods. Hazards: Frequent electrical shock hazards, furniture, office equipment, communicable diseases, chemicals and fumes (as related to specific assignment), and power/hand-operated equipment and machinery (as related to specific assignment).
