Position summary The Welder/Fitter fits, fabricates and welds metal components and assemblies to technical drawings, specifications and quality standards, with a focus on chrome carbide overlay wear parts. The role supports shop production, coaches fellow welders, and makes sure all work meets Soluroc's safety, quality and productivity expectations. Key responsibilities Fabrication & welding Read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, weld symbols, dimensions, tolerances and work instructions Prepare materials and select the required tools, fixtures, consumables and equipment Measure, mark, cut, fit, tack, align and assemble components accurately for welding Perform MIG, TIG and/or Stick welding as required Perform pipe fitting and welding on custom-fabricated assemblies Operate fabrication equipment including grinders, torches, drills and saws Assist in layout and measurement of materials Perform grinding, cleaning, slag removal, deburring and finishing Inspect welds and verify fit-up, alignment, dimensions and weld size for structural integrity and quality compliance Chrome carbide overlay Perform self-shielded flux-cored arc welding (FCAW-S) on chrome carbide overlay wear plates and custom parts Work with specialized alloy and hardfacing consumables to approved welding procedures and manufacturer requirements Adjust welding parameters and technique to suit base metal (mild, hardened/tempered or stainless steel), thickness, joint design and position Fit, cut, form and weld carbide overlay plate into finished, ready-to-install components Identify and report overlay and weld defects, dimensional issues, material concerns and equipment problems Shop operations Maintain a clean and organized work area Operate the overhead crane as required Perform routine equipment checks and report maintenance concerns Follow production priorities and communicate obstacles promptly Collaborate with supervisors and team members to meet production targets Support and coach fellow welders by sharing technical knowledge, good work practices and practical solutions Support continuous improvement in safety, quality and productivity Perform other related duties assigned by the supervisor or manager Health & safety Follow all Soluroc safety policies and shop procedures Wear required PPE at all times Participate in safety meetings and training Report hazards, near misses and unsafe conditions immediately Qualifications & experience Required 2+ years of hands-on fabrication, fitting and welding experience in an industrial or manufacturing setting Demonstrated experience with chrome carbide overlay, hardfacing or wear-resistant welding Demonstrated experience with self-shielded flux-cored arc welding (FCAW-S) Proficiency in MIG welding Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and welding symbols Ability to use measuring tools such as tape measures, squares, levels and calipers Ability to recognize common welding and fabrication defects and take corrective action Strong attention to detail and commitment to approved welding procedures and quality standards Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks and meet production deadlines, and to work as part of a team
