Job Title: Senior Substation Engineer Employment Type: Direct Hire Location: Montreal, Quebec, Canada (Hybrid – 3 days onsite) Salary: $117,000 – $136,000 per year based on experience Schedule: 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM (depending on Project) Position Overview We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Substation Engineer to provide technical leadership and engineering expertise across a portfolio of renewable energy projects in North America. This role will lead substation engineering activities, ensuring designs meet company standards, utility requirements, industry best practices, and applicable electrical codes. The ideal candidate brings extensive experience in high-voltage substation design, strong technical judgment, and the ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams throughout the project lifecycle—from preliminary engineering through construction and commissioning. Work Location: Hybrid role based in San Diego, CA or Montreal, Quebec, with three days per week onsite. Key Responsibilities Substation and Transmission Engineering Leadership Serve as a technical subject matter expert for substation and high-voltage engineering, including physical design, protection and control systems, major equipment specifications, and electrical engineering studies. Lead and support substation design activities across renewable energy projects, ensuring technical quality, reliability, and compliance with applicable standards. Provide engineering guidance and resolution for complex substation design challenges throughout project execution. Support transmission line design, interconnection applications, and related engineering activities as needed. Develop design criteria, technical specifications, and engineering requirements for project deliverables. Prepare and review engineering documentation, including single-line diagrams, electrical studies, and technical reports. Maintain alignment of technical specifications with evolving industry standards and best practices. Coordinate external engineering consultants and resources to support project requirements and workload. Review procurement packages, vendor documentation, and technical evaluations for major high-voltage equipment, including power transformers and HV circuit breakers. Collaborate with internal engineering teams and cross-functional departments, including construction and operations, to address design requirements, lessons learned, and process improvements. Provide project engineering management support for select initiatives. Participate in industry seminars, technical discussions, and professional development activities. Perform additional responsibilities as assigned. Working Conditions Approximately 85% of time spent in an office environment using computers, engineering software, Microsoft applications, communication tools, and general office equipment. Approximately 15% of time spent traveling to project sites nationally and internationally to evaluate locations, support project teams, and participate in technical discussions. Required Qualifications Education Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering. Experience Minimum of 7 years of hands-on experience in substation engineering and design. Professional experience supporting high-voltage electrical infrastructure projects. Preferred Qualifications Professional Engineer (PE) license strongly preferred. Technical Expertise Extensive knowledge of substation design, transmission systems, and high-voltage equipment. Strong understanding of substation engineering principles and the complete project lifecycle, including preliminary design, detailed engineering, construction support, and as-built documentation. Solid knowledge of electrical engineering codes, standards, and industry best practices to deliver safe, reliable, and cost-effective designs. Experience with electrical engineering analysis and design software, including ETAP, ASPEN, and PSCAD. Leadership and Professional Skills Ability to independently analyze and resolve complex engineering challenges. Strong leadership skills with experience mentoring junior engineers and coordinating cross-functional project activities. Excellent verbal and written communication skills with strong organizational and project management abilities. Demonstrated ability to identify opportunities for process improvement and support continuous improvement initiatives.
