Mechanical Engineer

Job Overview The Mechanical Engineer is responsible for independently managing mechanical engineering projects from concept through completion while delivering high-quality technical solutions that support Sustainable Projects Group's energy, sustainability, and building performance initiatives. Working in a remote-first environment, the Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for managing multiple projects simultaneously, collaborating with internal and external stakeholders, preparing engineering documentation, and ensuring projects are delivered on schedule and within budget. The successful candidate is self-motivated, organized, and comfortable working independently while maintaining regular communication with project teams. Responsibilities: Project Management Independently manage multiple mechanical engineering projects from initiation through completion. Develop project scopes, schedules, budgets, and deliverables. Coordinate project activities with internal teams, clients, consultants, contractors, and vendors. Monitor project progress and proactively identify and resolve technical or project-related issues. Ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and in accordance with client expectations. Mechanical Engineering & Design Design, evaluate, and optimize mechanical building systems for new construction and retrofit projects. Prepare and review mechanical system designs, calculations, specifications, and technical reports. Conduct engineering assessments of existing buildings and provide recommendations for retrofit opportunities and energy performance improvements. Review drawings, equipment selections, and design documentation for accuracy and quality. Ensure compliance with applicable building codes, engineering standards, and regulatory requirements. Support energy efficiency, sustainability, and building performance initiatives. Client & Stakeholder Management Build and maintain positive working relationships with clients and project stakeholders. Participate in client meetings and present technical information in a clear and professional manner. Respond to client questions and provide ongoing project updates. Collaborate with multidisciplinary project teams to ensure successful project execution. Quality & Documentation Prepare technical reports, engineering documentation, and project deliverables. Maintain organized project records and documentation. Perform quality reviews of engineering work prior to submission. Identify opportunities to improve engineering processes and project delivery. Miscellaneous Support business development activities by providing technical input on proposals and project opportunities. Stay current with industry best practices, codes, and emerging technologies. Perform other duties and special projects as assigned. Qualifications Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering. Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) registered with APEGA. Eligible for professional registration with Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia (EGBC), Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO), and the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Saskatchewan (APEGS). Minimum 3 years of mechanical engineering experience, preferably within building systems consulting, energy efficiency, or retrofit projects. Demonstrated experience with mechanical retrofit projects and existing building upgrades. Experience independently managing multiple engineering projects from initiation to completion. Strong understanding of applicable building codes, engineering standards, and mechanical building systems. Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and organizational skills. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Proficient with Microsoft Office and engineering design software such as AutoCAD, Revit, Bluebeam, or similar. Working Environment Remote-first position requiring a high degree of independence and accountability. Must be comfortable managing projects with minimal supervision while maintaining consistent communication with project teams. Ability to prioritize competing deadlines and manage workload effectively. Occasional travel to project sites or client meetings may be required. This position is based in Edmonton, Alberta. Calgary-based candidates will also be considered.
