Software Engineer – Open Source Contributions Position: Software Engineer – Open Source Contributions Type: Contractor Compensation: $50–$100/hour Location: Remote About the Opportunity micro1 is engaging experienced Software Engineers with open source development expertise to contribute to a customer project focused on high-quality software development. You will apply your programming and problem-solving skills to help train next-generation AI systems using real-world software engineering contributions. The work involves developing features, resolving complex bugs, refactoring existing codebases, optimizing performance, validating implementations, and applying advanced algorithms across established open source projects. No prior AI experience is required—your software engineering expertise and ability to produce high-quality, maintainable code are what matter. Responsibilities Develop, implement, and refine new features within existing open source codebases. Work with programming languages including Python 3, Java, Rust, C++, and TypeScript. Analyze and resolve complex bugs while ensuring robust, maintainable solutions. Refactor legacy code to improve performance, readability, scalability, and maintainability. Validate code implementations for accuracy, consistency, reliability, and adherence to project standards. Apply advanced algorithms and competitive programming techniques to solve complex technical problems. Analyze multifaceted problem constraints and identify efficient solution approaches. Collaborate remotely with other contributors to review proposed changes and maintain project documentation. Participate in code reviews and provide constructive technical feedback. Prepare clear and concise technical documentation explaining solution design and implementation details. Deliver high-quality, well-documented code within project requirements and deadlines. Required Qualifications Strong software engineering experience with open source codebases. Expert-level proficiency in at least two programming languages, such as Python, C++, Java, Rust, TypeScript, Go, or C#. Extensive experience with feature implementation, bug fixing, and codebase refactoring. Strong understanding of algorithms and complex programming problems. Demonstrated ability to analyze technical constraints and develop efficient solutions. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Experience reviewing, validating, and maintaining production-quality code. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong attention to detail when working with code, documentation, and technical requirements. Ability to work independently in a remote and collaborative environment. Preferred Qualifications Extensive history of meaningful open source contributions. Experience contributing features and fixes to established open source projects. Strong background in competitive programming or algorithm-intensive software development. Experience optimizing software for performance, scalability, and efficiency. Experience working across multiple programming languages and technology ecosystems. Ability to identify multiple solution pathways for complex engineering problems. Experience participating in peer code reviews and collaborative development workflows. Strong technical writing skills and experience producing detailed implementation documentation.
