Job Description Sign Shop Maintenance Worker Competition Number: 26/185 Posting Scope: Internal / External Posted Date: September 29, 2026 Closing Date: October 13, 2026, 4:30 PM PST Department: Engineering & Public Works Work schedule: Monday to Friday (40 hour work week) - Continuous (Full-Time) Salary: $36.62 per hour, Pay Grade 7 Job Code: 800 Employee Group: This is a CUPE Local 50 position Number of Vacancies: 1 This competition may be used to establish an eligibility list to fill future vacancies within this department, in accordance with the CUPE Local 50 Collective Agreement. The list will remain in effect for up to six months. POSITION FUNCTION Perform a variety of sign fabrication functions for the City of Victoria. KEY DUTIES Lay out and produce lettering and graphic images for signs, vehicle markings, anti-graffiti wraps, stencils, and decals using computerized sign making equipment; transfer to different substrates such as vinyl banner, glass, metals, plastics, or vinyl sheeting to produce finished signs. Follow the Uniform Traffic Control Manual guidelines in the layout and production of regulatory, warning guide and temporary construction signs. Apply fleet markings or wraps on City vehicles or property, install signs inside/outside of City buildings, and apply vinyl glass frosting on City buildings. Install and repair signs such as regulatory, street name, hazard and traffic; mix and place concrete for installation of sign posts as required; operate equipment such as hammer drill, post straightener, coring machine and various hand tools. Replace overhead signs by use of aerial lift truck as assigned. Perform related duties where qualified. INDEPENDENCE Work is performed according to seasonal programs or assigned by supervisor. Work is reviewed upon completion. Problems with placement of signs or markings are referred to supervisor. WORKING CONDITIONS Physical Effort: Lift and move medium weight equipment and materials. (often) Work in awkward position at a drafting table while weeding vinyl lettering, and assembling sign materials. (rare) Mental Effort: Short periods of intense concentration while doing detailed layout work. (often) Visual/Auditory Effort: Focus on fine detailed layout for short periods. (rare) Work Environment: Sign shop. Work outside in all weather conditions. (often) Work in an environment where protective measures must be taken to avoid exposure to fumes and equipment noise. (often) Work in close proximity to moving traffic. (often) Work from ladders. (often) Work irregular hours. (premium item) KEY SKILLS AND ABILITIES Organize and prioritize work. Understand and apply the techniques of sign layout, fabrication and installation. Working level knowledge of sign-making specialty software. Operate various hand and power tools. Produce signs and layouts using manual and computer aided sign making equipment. Operate aerial lift truck. Establish and maintain effective working relationships. Deal effectively with the public and outside agencies. Work and operate equipment safely. QUALIFICATIONS Formal Education, Training and Occupational Certification: High School Graduation. IMSA Level 1 Certificate. (16 hours) Current and valid Class 5 B.C. Driver's Licence. Experience: 1 year of related experience. or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
