Job details

About us Tom Barlow Architecture (TBA) is a BC architecture practice led by an AIBC-registered architect with a hands-on trades background. We do BC Building Code analysis, permit remediation, tenant improvement design, and general architectural services for owners, builders, and developers. We are building a bench of freelance designers and modellers we can bring in on projects as they come up. The role This is a fully remote, project-based role. Work from anywhere in BC, on your own schedule, and take on as much or as little as suits you. You will produce and coordinate Revit models and drawing packages for TBA projects from your own setup. No site visits or travel are required. Field information (measurements, photos, survey data, point clouds) will be supplied to you. Why this works well for freelancers Work from anywhere in BC. Rural, remote, and small-community locations are welcome. All you need is a reliable internet connection and your own workstation. Flexible by design. There are no set hours and no office. You manage your own time and work to agreed project deadlines. Take what fits. Projects are offered one at a time, so you can say yes or no based on your capacity. Take one project a year or several a month. Fits alongside other commitments. It suits anyone who wants to keep a design career going alongside other work, caregiving, study, or a full-time job (where your employer allows outside work). Clear scope and fixed fees. You know what you’re delivering and what you’ll be paid before you start. What you’ll do Build and maintain Revit models (new construction, TI, and existing-conditions models from supplied survey data and field documentation) Produce permit and construction drawing sets from the model Apply BC Building Code requirements to drawings and details, and flag code issues for architect review Coordinate with the architect, contractors, and consultants on drawing and model queries Support permit applications and respond to municipal review comments Requirements Based anywhere in British Columbia (remote communities encouraged to apply) Prior on-site or field experience (construction, site review, or field documentation), so you understand how drawings get built and can model realistically Strong Revit modelling skills, with working access to Revit 2025 or newer (our projects are in Revit 2025 onwards) Solid working knowledge of the BC Building Code (BCBC), including Part 9 and Part 3 as applicable Ability to produce clean, coordinated, permit-ready drawings Your own Revit 2025+ licence and a computer capable of running it Capacity to take on projects occasionally or regularly, with no minimum commitment Active business registration or willingness to invoice as a business Nice to have Experience with permit remediation or work with BC municipal building departments Point cloud/laser scan to Revit workflows Construction or trades background Experience with TI work How the engagement works Independent contractor engagement, not employment Paid per project at an agreed fixed fee (or milestone fees) quoted before work starts You set your own hours and methods, and you are free to take on other clients You may decline any project offered, and projects are not guaranteed You invoice TBA, and you are responsible for your own taxes, insurance, and GST where applicable Project scope, deliverables, deadlines, and fees are set out in a written agreement for each project All professional responsibility and sealing remain with the registered architect To apply Send a short intro, your resume or portfolio (sample Revit work and drawing sets), the Revit versions you use, where you’re based, and roughly how much capacity you have. Part-time and occasional availability is welcome. Send everything to studio@tombarlow.ca Thank you for your time. We will not consider applications from outside British Columbia.
