Job Purpose: The Senior Electrical Engineering Specialist is responsible for leading the electrical development activities for advanced medical device products while providing technical leadership of the electrical discipline throughout the product development lifecycle. The role owns the electrical subsystem, including electrical architecture, embedded hardware, electrical interfaces, and electrical verification, while contributing to multidisciplinary system integration and technical decision making. Key deliverables: Electrical System Leadership Own the electrical subsystem architecture and technical direction, electrical design inputs, subsystem requirements, interface requirements, and technical decisions Lead the electrical discipline throughout concept development, feasibility, detailed design, verification, manufacturing transfer, and sustaining engineering Define electrical interfaces between controller hardware, firmware, sensors, actuators, accessories, and the overall system Provide technical leadership for embedded hardware architecture, power distribution, sensing, actuator-drive electronics, and hardware–firmware interfaces Lead multidisciplinary electrical trade-off decisions while contributing to overall product architecture and system-level decision making Be accountable for the quality, completeness, technical integrity, and performance of the electrical subsystem Foster internal ownership of electrical technical knowledge and reduce long-term dependence on external development partners Support design-for-manufacturability and design-for-testability activities for electrical assemblies Support manufacturing test strategies, electrical acceptance criteria, and production readiness Support component lifecycle management, supplier changes, and obsolescence planning Support electrical investigations, corrective actions, engineering changes, and sustaining engineering activities External Development Partner & Supplier Management Lead the electrical technical interface with external development partners, suppliers, and consultants Review and challenge electrical architectures, schematics, PCB designs, interface definitions, analyses, specifications, and test evidence developed internally or externally Support technical due diligence, technology evaluations, and design-change assessments for externally developed technologies Ensure critical electrical design knowledge, rationale, interface definitions, verification evidence, and supplier know-how are transferred to, retained within, and further developed by Trudell Collaborate with Manufacturing, NPI, Supplier Quality, contract manufacturers, and PCBA suppliers during development and product transfer System Integration & Product Development Collaborate with mechanical, firmware, systems, manufacturing, quality, regulatory, and test engineering teams throughout product development Define and maintain electrical interfaces between subsystems Lead electrical integration activities and support multidisciplinary system integration Support prototype builds, engineering builds, laboratory integration, characterization, troubleshooting, and root-cause investigations Contribute electrical expertise to multidisciplinary architecture decisions and system-level trade-offs Verification, Risk Management & Compliance Develop electrical characterization and verification strategies Define electrical test methods, acceptance criteria, and performance metrics Support electrical safety, EMC, hardware–firmware integration, and subsystem verification activities Identify technical risks and develop mitigation strategies Participate in design reviews, risk management activities, and technical investigations Documentation & Design Controls Develop and maintain electrical design documentation, including architecture, interface definitions, design rationale, schematics, bills of material, analyses, and technical calculations Support hardware–firmware interface documentation and electrical subsystem specifications Document characterization methods, verification evidence, and engineering decisions Support configuration management, engineering changes, and traceability activities Participate in design reviews and design control activities Health & Safety Ensure compliance with relevant health and safety legislation, including the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, etc. Education & Experience: Degree in Engineering (Electrical, Mechatronics) or a related field of study Master’s degree is an asset 10+ years of experience in product development and electrical engineering, with demonstrated experience of launching medical devices Experience leading or influencing technical development activities within multidisciplinary engineering teams Specialized Skill or Knowledge: Strong fundamentals in analog and digital electronics, embedded hardware, and hardware–firmware integration Demonstrated ability to lead electrical development and make multidisciplinary engineering trade-offs Experience leading the development and review of electrical architectures, schematics, PCB designs, and embedded hardware implementations Working knowledge of firmware architecture and hardware–firmware interfaces sufficient to guide technical decisions and collaborate effectively with firmware developers Experience with actuator-drive electronics, sensing systems, control electronics, or comparable embedded electromechanical systems Experience using laboratory equipment such as oscilloscopes, impedance analyzers, electronic loads, and logic analyzers Experience leading electrical development through concept, verification, and manufacturing transfer Experience working with external development partners, suppliers, or contract manufacturers Experience in regulated product development considered an asset.
