Intermediate Anatomy and Pathology Technician, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine

Description The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine is currently seeking a Full-time Temporary Relief Intermediate Anatomy and Pathology Technician for approximately 1 year. The Intermediate Anatomy and Pathology Technician is a member of the UCVM Teaching Team who reports to the Manager, Community Partnerships and Clinical Affairs and receives day to day direction from the Senior Anatomy Technician, the Anatomy and Pathology Course Coordinators (some direction may also be provided by other faculty members involved in curriculum delivery). This position also works closely with the clinical teaching technician team around clinical teaching and related activities. The position involves the collection, inventory, handling of fresh, frozen and embalmed animal cadavers, organs, and tissues (with the potential for handling of human tissue) for the purpose of preparation, preservation (including plastination), and use in the various teaching, research, and service programs of the University of Calgary Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (UCVM). This position works Monday to Friday, 35 hours per week. Work outside regular hours will be required for cadaveric material pickup and for other activities (meetings, special events, etc.) as required. The position works out of the Spy Hill Campus; however, travel from Spy Hill will be required (principally for the collection of cadaveric material). Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to): Prepares quality anatomical and pathological resources (including animal and human plastinated specimens) for use in UCVM teaching, research, and service activities Procures, prepares, catalogs and archives suitable teaching specimens (cadaveric materials) from abattoirs, veterinary practices, necropsy (pathological) and other suppliers in support of UCVM teaching, research, and service activities. This includes off campus collection where appropriate Participates as needed in weekly logistics meetings of the clinical teaching technician team to help plan for the use of cadaveric animals and tissues. Must work as part of a team to support teaching and activities of UCVM Coordinates the appropriate disposal of cadaveric material, animal tissue and other biohazardous waste where appropriate including associated documentation, and collects tissues for secondary/tertiary use Orders required equipment and supplies and updates all equipment, supply, and specimen inventories Maintains inventory levels of UCVM anatomical specimen collection and determines needs based on those levels Collaborates with others (internal to the Faculty as well as external) to facilitate various needs for specimens Occasionally handles live domestic and farm animals (under the direction of a veterinarian with UCVM or a veterinarian with the University) to assist with euthanasia or to help with exams In extraordinary circumstances such as staffing shortages, may be called upon to assist with other teaching lab sessions under the supervision of the lead technician or Manager Ensures laboratory equipment and audiovisual equipment is in working order (performs basic cleaning and maintenance and arranges for repairs) and laboratory materials (consumables) are appropriately dispensed Adherence to University, Diagnostic Services Unit Quality Management System practices and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and good documentation skills are required. Must participate in writing, reviewing and revising SOPs relevant to laboratory safety as well as acting as a role model for all safe practices and procedures Ensures laboratories are kept clean, safe, and well-lit as well as operating and complying under normal and acceptable laboratory standards Participates and develops proficiency in the plastination process under the guidance of the Senior Anatomy Technician Supports DVM student learning during laboratory sessions by demonstrating safew and appropriate techniques and laboratory practices Advises the Senior Anatomy Technician and the Manager of any incident or occupational illness Qualifications / Requirements: An undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline is required although an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered A minimum of 3 yrs. experience with cadaver preparation, fixation, and laboratory support is required. Plastination experience is not required, but the incumbent must be willing to learn. Ability to perform physically demanding and manual work, with some heavy lifting such as large animal handling equipment. Physical Demands Analysis available Knowledge of veterinary comparative anatomy, physiology, pathology, medical terminology, biosafety and zoonotic disease is considered an asset Extensive experience with animal dissection required Sound knowledge of the principles of sanitation and disinfection is required Proven organizational skills with the ability to set priorities and meet objectives Demonstrated ability to work independently, prioritize and exercise sound judgement within established procedures and guidelines Attention to detail, accuracy, records management and strong written and verbal communication skills are required. Ability to manage a variety of issues and tasks concurrently Ability to work in a team environment and build relationships within the faculty and external veterinary community in a professional manner Ability to adapt technical support to meet varying teaching, research and service needs Ability to communicate and impart knowledge to students and faculty is required A valid full Class 5 Driver License is required. Ability to operate a truck and stock trailer when required to transfer large animals to the teaching facility as well as safely load and unload livestock into trailer is considered an asset Intermediate to advanced proficiency in a variety of software applications (MS office, PeopleSoft, and Internet) Experience with digital content post-processing software such as Adobe Photoshop and Premiere Pro, and web-based programs/programming is considered an asset Application Deadline: Month xx, 202x We would like to thank all applicants in advance for submitting their resumes. The technician is responsible for procuring, preparing, and archiving anatomical and pathological specimens for teaching and research. They also maintain laboratory equipment, manage inventories, and support student learning during lab sessions.

An undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline and at least 3 years of experience in cadaver preparation and laboratory support are required. A valid Class 5 Driver License is mandatory for the collection of materials.
