The successful applicant will have a strong foundation in hydrodynamics and control of surface or sub-surface vessels, marine structures and materials, electrified vessel power and propulsion systems, or instrumentation and ocean observation systems. The successful candidate will have demonstrated potential to form a research program that combines mastery in underpinning fundamentals such as fluid mechanics, dynamics and control with application of recent advances in artificial intelligence, machine learning and multidisciplinary design optimization for the synthesis of next-generation autonomous ocean and marine systems. The successful applicant will: • be appointed to the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the rank of Assistant Professor; • expand the faculty’s portfolio of industry and defense research partnerships and interface ocean and marine technology innovations with regional and national initiatives to grow a blue economy; • contribute to the design and delivery of course based curricula for the Mechanical Engineering undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Victoria offers Bachelors, Masters, and Ph.D. degree programs. We have 30 faculty members, over 550 undergraduate students, and over 140 graduate students. Industrial collaboration enriches our teaching and research activities, and our expertise in Clean Energy Systems, Biomedical Systems, Aerospace, Advanced Vehicles, Mechatronics and Robotics is demonstrated in vibrant undergraduate and graduate curricula that expose our students to cutting-edge engineering tools and technologies. The successful candidate will: •hold a Ph.D. inmechanical,oceanoroffshoreengineering or aclosely-relateddiscipline; •be a registered professional engineer inCanada, or be eligible to apply for registrationwiththe Engineers and Geoscientists of BritishColumbia (details available atwww.egbc.ca); •demonstrate particular analytical and/or experimental research creativityinthe design,characterization, modelling, experimentation and/or systems integration of surface andsubsea systems; •demonstrate the potential to achieve international recognition in their field through dissemination of research in both traditional (academic literature) and non-traditional venues; •Possess excellent communication skills with an ability to communicate research vision,methods, rationale and impacts across a diverse array of audiences. •have a demonstrated ability to establish collaboration across disciplines, develop academic,government and industry partnerships, and engage in aerospace initiatives with realworldimpact. The salary for thisposition includes a competitivesalary rangeof $115,000 -$142,000.
