THE OPPORTUNITY: EDUCATION ASSISTANT – DEAF OR HARD OF HEARING SUPPORT - ASL REQUIRED (School & Student Support A, SSA, EA) For information about the role of an EA (SSA) within the VSB see the following videos provided by Langara College: Role of an On-Call SSA , Role of an EA in a Secondary School , Secondary Life Skills In this position, you will: Provide school & student support to assist the schools as assigned Under the direction of a senior member of the team, contribute to the development and implementation of individual programs and contracts for students who are unable to function in a regular classroom setting Evaluate and maintain records of student progress through communication log; discuss with team members any changes which may be made to an individual student's program Communicate and engage with community agencies as required Participate in a wide variety of field trips, sports, social, recreational and craft activities Support students in community-based programming such as work experience, travel training, and relevant community outings Provide support to students with respect to their social and emotional needs Supervise students, as required, and deal with disciplinary needs as they occur Prepare instructional aid materials; set up and operate instructional aid equipment Perform other work within the job band as assigned Itinerant Assignment: A School & Student Support worker is hired to work throughout the Vancouver School District and not for a particular school or a restricted set of duties. Although in posted vacancies specific reference may be made to a school and to the duties associated with that assignment, Employee Services may transfer staff within the system in certain circumstances as deemed appropriate. Qualifications Completion of Grade 12 Completion of education assistant program or related field and over two (2) months of experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience Sound knowledge and related experience working with students with disabilities, diverse abilities, intellectual, behaviour and/or physical abilities Sound knowledge of educational/developmental psychology and behaviour management Ability to effectively assist students in behaviour management, individual skill development and the integration process Ability to provide personal care and/or nurse delegated duties to meet students’ requirements Ability to lift and position students of varying weights required. Fluency in basic ASL required Must possess or be willing to obtain an Occupational First Aid (OFA) certificate and will be required to perform Occupational First Aid if assigned by the Supervisor. OFA attendants may, at the direction of Employee Services, be required to perform emergency coverage at other locations. Compensation The salary is $32.62 per hour (+5% Second Language Premium), plus a comprehensive benefits package,including Municipal Pension Plan (MPP), Vancouver Employee Savings Plan, Extended Health, Dental, Group Life, Long Term Disability, Vacation, & Gratuity Days. Working months are September to June each year. Requirements

Applicants must have Grade 12 completion, an education assistant program or related training with more than two months of experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Required qualifications include fluency in basic ASL, relevant experience supporting students with disabilities or diverse abilities, and the ability to provide behavior support, personal care, and student lifting and positioning; an Occupational First Aid certificate must be held or obtained.
