About the Project The Alexandra Bridge Replacement Project is one of Canada's most significant infrastructure initiatives, replacing the existing Alexandra Bridge that has connected Ottawa, Ontario, and Gatineau, Quebec for more than 120 years. As a vital interprovincial transportation corridor within the National Capital Region, the bridge serves thousands of pedestrians, cyclists, motorists, and transit users while forming an integral part of Confederation Boulevard. Having reached the end of its service life, the existing bridge will be replaced with a modern, resilient crossing designed to meet the region's long-term transportation needs. About the job Reporting to the Construction Manager, the Construction Methods Specialist focuses on ensuring the approved "Motion" design concept can be safely, efficiently, and sustainably built. Working within a progressive design-build (PDB) framework, this role bridges the gap between AECOM's design engineering and Capital Crossing Constructors’ actual execution plan ahead of the 2028 construction start. What you'll be doing Roles and Responsibilities include: Constructability & Design Integration Assess Bridge Erection Methods: Evaluate optimal staging, crane positioning, and marine-based barge setups to construct the three undulating arches over the Ottawa River. Ensure Deliverable Constructability: Review ongoing schematic designs to flag structural geometries that are overly restrictive, expensive, or risky to fabricate. Integrate Digital Workflows: Use Building Information Modeling (BIM) tools to simulate complex construction sequencing and avoid spatial clashes before breaking ground. Incorporate Material Constraints: Align construction methodologies with the project’s mandate to prioritize Canadian steel, aluminum, and domestic supply chains. Deconstruction Sequencing of Existing Bridge Plan Existing Bridge Dismantling: Formulate meticulous removal steps for the 120-year-old existing bridge truss structures without damaging the sensitive river ecosystem or shoreline. Manage Structural Integrity: Analyze the structural stability design deliverables from AECOM of the old bridge at every stage of its step-by-step disassembly to ensure worker safety. Coordinate Waste Diversion: Define methods for sorting, recycling, or preserving historical elements of the old bridge as part of the project’s legacy commitments. Marine and Environmental Logistics Design River Interventions: Develop structural approaches for trestle, temporary piers, jetties or deep-water foundations while minimizing disruption to the Ottawa Riverbed. Draft Mitigation Controls: Establish specialized construction methods to control turbidity, protect underwater habitats, and suppress noise in compliance with regulations. Manage Seasonal Windows: Adjust the construction logic to account for heavy spring river flows, winter ice cover, and strict environmental fish-spawning shutdowns. Urban Impact & Logistics Management Design Traffic Phasing: Collaborate with traffic engineers to craft construction phasing that preserves active mobility, vehicle corridors, and future tramway provisions. Optimize Laydown Space: Plan tightly constrained logistics hubs and material staging zones on both the Ottawa and Gatineau shorelines. Mitigate Community Footprint: Select low-impact equipment, hoarding and alternative construction techniques to curb noise, vibration, and dust near the Canadian Museum of History. Risk Management & Commercial Support Refine Target Pricing: Provide highly detailed labor, equipment, and structural time estimates to assist the PDB team in defining a guaranteed maximum price. Help develop the Risk Register: Identify, quantify, and document technical risks—such as unmapped utilities, complex geotechnical profiles, or marine accidents—and develop corresponding backup plans. Support Regulatory Sign-offs: Draft technical construction methodology statements required to clear National Capital Commission (NCC) Federal Land Use and Design Approvals. Technical Writing & Documentation Responsibilities : Draft Work Method Statements: Write clear, sequential Work Method Statements for complex operations like river trestle installation and heavy arch lifts. Develop Deconstruction Manuals: Produce step-by-step technical manuals detailing the structural dismantling sequence for the existing 120-year-old heritage bridge truss. Write Risk Narratives: Formulate detailed technical narratives for the project Risk Register, translating complex engineering hazards into clear business and safety impacts for stakeholders. Compile Submission Packages: Draft formal technical responses and methodology descriptions required for National Capital Commission (NCC) Federal Land Use and Design Approvals. Standardize Technical Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs): Create SOPs for site teams regarding marine operations, environmental turbidity tracking, and winter concrete curing protocols What we are looking for : Education: Degree in Civil Engineering, or Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology Project Portfolio: Proven track record working on complex bridge rehabilitation, replacement, or large-scale transportation projects valued over $50M. Delivery Frameworks: Proven ability to work within a Collaborative Delivery Model, specifically a Progressive Design-Build (PDB) Project Technical Writing: Experience authoring peer-reviewed engineering reports, formal work method statements, and technical risk assessments. Professional Tenure: 2 to 5 years of experience in heavy civil construction, engineering or marine infrastructure planning. Why Choose Us? Expected Base Salary: $100,000 - $120,000 per year. Candidates should have a degree in Civil Engineering or a diploma in Civil Engineering Technology, along with 2 to 5 years of experience in heavy civil construction or marine infrastructure planning. A proven track record on complex bridge projects valued over $50M is also required.
