Custodian - Relief

Custodians at YWCA Calgary are responsible for maintaining YW property to acceptable standards of cleanliness, ensuring that facilities and surrounding areas are welcoming, clean, and safe for all users. As part of a dynamic team, the successful candidate will perform basic maintenance and day-to-day janitorial duties, while adhering to YWCA policies, procedures, and applicable Occupational Health and Safety requirements. This is a relief position with flexible, varied hours that will be scheduled based on operational needs and staff coverage requirements. WHAT WE OFFER * Truly rewarding work; contribute to lasting, positive change for individuals and our community * A supportive team environment and opportunities for professional development * Comprehensive benefits including an employee assistance plan WHAT YOU'LL DO * The role involves regular physical activity, including lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, bending, rotating, and walking, as well as standing for extended periods and performing repetitive tasks * Clean, maintain, and ensure overall hygiene of specified spaces at YW * Ensure that all safety standards are met * Proactively identify and notify your supervisor of areas that require attention or maintenance * Report unsafe work practices, hazards, or incidents immediately in accordance with YW’s incident reporting requirements to help ensure proactive risk mitigation and management in compliance with legislative requirements (Occupational Health & Safety, Workers’ Compensation Board, etc.) * Use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), safety materials, devices, and tools to safely perform the work * Maintain and correctly use janitorial equipment * Participate in YW meetings as required * Engage and participate in learning, training, and certification opportunities * Foster and contribute to a culture of inclusion and equity in a diverse work environment; understand and recognize that individual differences significantly contribute to YW Calgary’s success in its programs and workplace environment * Share individual accountability to create and maintain inclusive and safe spaces and practices (physically and psychologically) that are open, transparent, and encourage accountability, advocacy, and mentorship WHAT YOU'LL BRING * Strong customer service skills * Ability to positively contribute to the team and work collaboratively * Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to effectively speak, read and write in English * Takes initiative, demonstrates adaptability, and responds well to change in a dynamic work environment * Experience maintaining and operating cleaning equipment (e.g., carpet cleaner, floor scrubber, Kaivac machine, and vacuum cleaners) * Strong knowledge of the safe use and application of cleaning chemicals and products * Computer literacy and proficiency in Microsoft 360 applications * Successful completion of First Aid training within three to six months is a requirement of the role or provide proof of current certification * Current WHMIS certifications If you want to change lives, we want to hear from you. The custodian is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness, hygiene, and safety of YWCA facilities through regular janitorial tasks and equipment operation. They must also proactively identify maintenance needs and adhere to all safety and incident reporting protocols.

Candidates must have experience operating cleaning equipment and possess strong knowledge of safe chemical handling. A current WHMIS certification is required, and successful completion of First Aid training is expected within the first few months of employment.
