Job Description AECOM’s Buildings + Places team is seeking a Mechanical Engineering Technologist to join growing Ottawa, Ontario office in a newly created role. As part of a multidisciplinary team, you will contribute to the design and delivery of mechanical building systems for a diverse portfolio of projects including transit, municipal, commercial, institutional, education, and government facilities. Working alongside engineers, architects, and technical specialists, you will produce and coordinate mechanical design deliverables through design, BIM modelling, coordination, construction administration, and field reviews. This position offers the opportunity to work on complex projects while developing technical expertise within a collaborative and innovative environment. Major Responsibilities The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to: Develop and maintain 3D BIM (Revit) models and mechanical drawing packages for HVAC, plumbing, and fire protection systems. Prepare finished mechanical design drawings from sketches, mark-ups, notes, and details; incorporate redlines and coordinated inputs from internal disciplines. Assist with engineering calculations and design support activities under the direction of an engineer (e.g., documentation, equipment schedules, and design coordination inputs). Support preparation of equipment schedules and preliminary equipment lists, coordinating inputs with engineers and vendors/suppliers as required. Support preparation of specifications and ensure alignment between drawings, schedules, and specification intent. Coordinate with other disciplines (architectural, structural, electrical, civil) to resolve issues, improve constructability, and support timely delivery. Monitor and document conformance with quality, performance, safety, and code requirements; maintain project documentation including quality review records. Perform self-checks/QA of drawings and models prior to formal reviews; contribute to continuous improvement of drafting/BIM and documentation workflows. Support submission package preparation and issuance (e.g., permitting, tender, and construction packages). Support field reviews/site investigations and construction administration tasks (as assigned), including documenting observations and assisting with responses to RFIs and site questions. Work in engineering project collaboration platforms (e.g., ProjectWise, BIM 360, Autodesk Construction Cloud). Complete tasks of moderate complexity independently and receive guidance on new assignments and atypical matters. Provide day-to-day guidance to less experienced colleagues when needed. Qualifications Minimum Requirements: College Diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology (or equivalent). 2+ years of relevant experience supporting building mechanical design and documentation (HVAC, plumbing, and/or fire protection). Proficiency in Revit (BIM) for mechanical building systems. Working knowledge of typical quality practices for deliverables (e.g., self-checking, issue resolution, and documentation control). Security clearance eligibility: Ability to obtain and maintain a Government of Canada security clearance (or currently hold a valid clearance), as required for assigned projects. Preferred Qualifications 4+ years of relevant experience in mechanical building systems (HVAC/plumbing/fire protection) design support and documentation. Certified Engineering Technologist (CET), Certified Technician (C.Tech) designation (or actively working toward certification). Experience developing drawings from concept through detailed design and supporting tender/construction documentation Experience supporting mechanical system design for institutional, municipal, transit, or government facilities. Familiarity with relevant codes and standards such as Ontario Building code, National Building Code of Canada, ASHRAE standards, NFPA standards, CSA standards related to building mechanical systems, and related mechanical/plumbing/fire protection standards. Experience with AutoCAD and Autodesk Revit Experience with BIM coordination processes and multidisciplinary project delivery. Strong written and oral communication skills and comfort collaborating with multidisciplinary teams across different cities. Experience with design coordination in cloud-based environments (e.g., BIM 360 / Autodesk Construction Cloud). Additional Information Relocation is not available for this position.
