Our XR & AI practice is building immersive training and onboarding platforms that combine Virtual Reality, Artificial Intelligence, and enterprise-grade software architecture to help organizations improve learning outcomes, engagement, and operational performance. We are looking for a Technical Lead who can help us scale our XR platform and lead the technical direction of our next generation of AI-powered immersive training products. This position is open only to Canadian citizens or permanent residents. Role Overview This role combines technical leadership, solution architecture, AI expertise, and hands-on development. You will work closely with our Product Owner, Program Manager, Product Designer, and Unity Lead to transform product vision into scalable, maintainable, and high-quality software solutions. This is not a people management role. We are looking for a technical leader who can align the team around a shared architecture, establish engineering standards, break down complex initiatives into executable plans, and actively contribute to development. Expected allocation: * 30% Technical Leadership & Architecture * 70% Hands-on Development Key Responsibilities TECHNICAL LEADERSHIP * Own the technical architecture of the XR Training Academy platform * Define and maintain architecture standards across frontend, backend, AI, cloud, and Unity integrations * Create technical roadmaps aligned with product goals * Lead technical planning and solution design sessions * Review technical approaches and ensure alignment with business requirements * Prevent over-engineering and unnecessary technical complexity SOLUTION ARCHITECTURE * Design scalable cloud-native architectures * Define APIs, integration patterns, and service boundaries * Ensure performance, security, maintainability, and scalability considerations are built into solutions * Guide AI architecture and integration decisions * Evaluate and recommend technology choices PRODUCT DELIVERY * Translate product requirements into technical implementation plans * Break epics and features into technical workstreams * Define acceptance criteria and technical success metrics * Identify technical risks and mitigation strategies * Support estimation and sprint planning activities AI LEADERSHIP * Guide the implementation of AI-powered experiences * Evaluate and integrate LLMs, AI services, and agent-based workflows * Establish best practices for AI architecture, prompting, evaluation, and governance * Coach team members on the effective use of AI-assisted development HANDS-ON DEVELOPMENT * Contribute production-quality code * Build backend services, APIs, integrations, and cloud infrastructure * Support frontend and platform development as required * Review pull requests and mentor developers * Troubleshoot technical issues and support delivery teams TEAM COLLABORATION * Partner closely with: * Product Owner * Program Manager * Product Designer * Unity Lead * Foster strong communication and accountability * Help create a high-performing engineering culture * Participate actively in retrospectives and continuous improvement initiatives Required Qualifications TECHNICAL * 8+ years of software development experience * 3+ years in a Technical Lead, Lead Developer, or Solution Architect role * Strong full-stack development experience * Experience designing and building cloud-native applications * Experience with: * TypeScript / JavaScript * Python/FastAPI * React or modern frontend frameworks * REST APIs and integrations * Cloud platforms (Azure preferred) * CI/CD pipelines AI * Experience building applications that leverage Large Language Models (LLMs) * Familiarity with: * OpenAI * Azure OpenAI * Agentic workflows * RAG architectures * Prompt engineering * AI evaluation and governance * Skills and MCP (Model Context Protocol) Architecture & Leadership * Strong systems-thinking and architecture skills * Ability to balance speed, quality, and scalability * Experience leading technical design discussions * Strong communication and stakeholder management skills * Ability to challenge assumptions and drive alignment constructively * Multi-tenant SaaS architecture and compliance-aware/data-residency design Nice-to-Have Qualifications * XR, VR, AR, or Unity experience * Experience building training, education, or simulation platforms * Experience with multi-modal AI systems * Experience in regulated industries such as financial services, healthcare, or education * Experience working in consulting or professional services environments What Success Looks Like Within the first 90 days, you will: * Establish a technical roadmap for XR Training Academy * Create architecture standards and development guidelines * Improve technical planning and task breakdown processes * Align frontend, backend, AI, and Unity development efforts * Reduce rework and technical ambiguity * Increase delivery predictability and team accountability Within the first year, you will: * Help scale the XR Training Academy platform * Build a repeatable foundation for future XR and AI products * Establish engineering practices that support enterprise-grade delivery * Become a key technical leader within AEQ's Innovation Practice Why Join AEQ * Work at the intersection of AI, XR, and digital transformation * Build products that improve learning, onboarding, and employee performance * Influence product and technical strategy * Collaborate with a highly entrepreneurial team * Help shape the future of immersive training and AI-powered experiences

Requirements

Requires over 8 years of software development experience, including at least 3 years in a lead or architect role with strong full-stack and cloud expertise. Candidates must have experience building applications with Large Language Models (LLMs) and be Canadian citizens or permanent residents.
