Positions of Special Responsibility receive an additional pay allowance in accordance with the collective agreement based on the levels 1, 2, or 3. Please contact Josh Gutknecht, Principal, if you have any questions about this position TEACHER LIBRARIAN QUALIFICATIONSThere is a significant body of research that demonstrates that a qualified teacher-librarian has a positive impact on school culture and student achievement. Indeed, several studies have established that teachers collaborate more in schools with a teacher-librarian and students read more, enjoy reading more, write better, access and use information more effectively and excel in academic content areas. This does not happen by chance, however.The District believes the role of a teacher-librarian to be a critical one as we continually strive for increased student achievement. Teacher-librarians need to be skilled classroom teachers who can provide leadership while working with others to design and implement resource-based instructional programs. Teacher-librarians need to have demonstrated an aptitude with integrating information and computer technology into the curriculum and be able to provide teachers with in-service and leadership in this area. They also need to have the knowledge and skills necessary to recommend learning resources and assist students who are working on classroom projects and self-directed studies. Successful course completion in the areas of teacher-librarianship, literacy, information studies and learning resource management is necessary.Professional Competencies – The Teacher-Librarian: 1.1 places a priority on staff relationships and leadership in the implementation of change;1.2 provides leadership in collaborative program planning and teaching to ensure both physical and intellectual access to information and commitment to voluntary reading;1.3 knows curriculum programs mandated by the province, district and school1.4 ability to develop and implement curricula relating to information literacy and inquiry – this includes assuming leadership role for project-based learning1.5 ability to manage a resource collection using curricular and student interests to identify and obtain library materials, organize and maintain the library collection to promote independent reading and lifelong learning1.6 ability to assist students in selecting appropriate learning resources1.7 understands students and their social, emotional and intellectual needs;1.8 has expert knowledge in evaluating learning resources in different formats and media, both on-site and remote, to support the instructional program;1.9 develops and promotes the effective use of informational and imaginative resources in all formats through cooperative professional activities;1.10 provides appropriate information, resources or instruction to satisfy the needs of individuals and groups;1.11 uses appropriate information technology to acquire, organize and disseminate information;1.12 manages library programs, services and staff to support the stated educational goals of the school;1.13 evaluates program and services1.14 an instructional leader in current educational technologies1.15 experience using Criteria Based assessment and formative assessment1.16 collaborative skills to support classroom teachers in fostering independent learners by team teaching research skills, information literacy, technology, communication and critical thinking skills.Personal Competencies – The Teacher Librarian:2.1 is committed to program excellence 2.2 seeks out challenges and sees new opportunities both inside and outside the library; 2.3 sees the big picture;2.4 looks for partnerships and alliances;2.5 creates an environment of mutual respect and trust2.6 has effective communication skills;2.7 works well with others in a team;2.8 provides leadership;2.9 plans, prioritizes and focuses on what is critical;2.10 is committed to lifelong learning;2.11 is flexible and positive in a time of continuing change2.12 has a strong knowledge of literacy at all grade levels.
