Cape Breton University’s Mi’kmaq Studies and Unama’ki College are seeking applicants interested in teaching specific courses in the fall or winter term on campus, online, or in community. We are seeking qualified L’nu sessional instructors who may be available to teach courses that become available over the next two years. We anticipate ongoing teaching needs in areas such as: Mi’kmaw Language classes Mi’kmaw History classes Mi’kmaw Traditional Governance Other areas of Mi’kmaw knowledge and expertise This is an excellent opportunity for individuals who are interested in exploring a future teaching career, while sharing their knowledge and experience with students. The ideal candidates will possess: A graduate degree in a relevant discipline; and/or applicants who do not hold a Master's degree but have significant traditional, cultural, community-based, or professional knowledge will also be considered for courses that align with their area of expertise. Experience teaching in First Nations communities; Relevant qualifications, experience, or demonstrated expertise in the subject area being taught. TEACHING ON CAMPUS: MI’KMAQ STUDIES Situated within the School of Arts and Social Science (SASS), Mi’kmaq Studies advances Mi’kmaw knowledge and scholarship in support of students developing academic critical thinking skills and awareness of Mi’kmaw perspectives and knowledges. Mi’kmaq Studies fosters engaged citizens who can interact respectfully with Mi’kmaw communities, contribute to self-determination, and understand the importance of upholding treaty and rights-based responsibilities. It is available as a major, double major, and concentration in the Bachelor of Arts (BA) and as a major or double major in the Bachelor of Arts Community Studies (BACS). We are seeking instructors who can teach in this area on campus, and sometimes online. Fall and winter courses typically run for 12 weeks. TEACHING OFF-CAMPUS: IN-COMMUNITY PROGRAMMING For more than 30 years, Unama’ki College’s In-Community Degree Programs have been making post-secondary education more accessible to Indigenous students by offering tailored degree programming across Mi’kma’ki. Students have the opportunity to earn a degree from CBU while studying at home, close to their families and supports systems in addition to receiving specialized student support from CBU. We seek instructors who are interested in teaching courses in-community, which are taught in a more condensed timeline (4 to 8 weeks).
