Job summary
Role Description The Science Tutor will provide individualized and small-group instruction in core science subjects (such as general science, biology, chemistry, and physics) to students at the elementary, high school, and potentially first-year university levels. This is a contract, hybrid role based in Toronto, ON, with a mix of in-person sessions and some work-from-home online tutoring. Day-to-day responsibilities include planning and delivering lessons aligned with school curricula, explaining complex concepts in accessible ways, helping learners prepare for tests and assignments, and monitoring progress toward academic goals. The Science Tutor will use an accountability-focused approach, supporting students in developing effective study strategies, time management skills, and a sense of ownership over their learning. The role also involves communicating regularly with students and families, documenting progress, and adjusting instructional strategies to meet individual needs. Qualifications Strong subject-matter expertise in science (e.g., biology, chemistry, physics, general science) and ability to teach across elementary, high school, and introductory university levels. Demonstrated instructional skills, including lesson planning, explaining complex concepts clearly, and adapting teaching methods to diverse learning styles. Experience with one-on-one and small-group tutoring or teaching, including assessing student needs and tracking academic progress. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport, encourage accountability, and motivate students in a positive, supportive manner. Strong organizational and time management skills to balance multiple students, schedules, and lesson plans in a hybrid work environment. Comfort with online tools and platforms for virtual tutoring, including basic proficiency with video conferencing and digital learning resources. Post-secondary coursework or a degree in a science-related field, education, or a closely related discipline is preferred. Prior experience working with youth or learners from diverse backgrounds; familiarity with Ontario curricula is an asset. Ability to work in-person in Toronto, ON and maintain reliable access to a quiet, professional space for remote sessions.
