Uncertified Operator Competition Number: 2026-43 This position reports directly to the Waterworks Managers and offers an opportunity to build a long-term career in the City's Water and Wastewater Department. Previous water or wastewater experience is not required. The City will provide hands-on training and mentorship to help you develop the skills and knowledge needed to become a qualified Water and Wastewater Treatment Operator. You will work alongside experienced operators and gradually take on more responsibility as your skills develop. We are looking for motivated, reliable individuals who are willing to learn and grow. What You’ll Learn and Do You’ll work alongside certified operators and managers to learn the daily operation and maintenance of the City’s Water and Wastewater Treatment Plants. Your responsibilities will grow as your skills grow, including: * Plant operations — learning how to run treatment processes, equipment, and systems * Sampling & monitoring — collecting and analyzing water and wastewater samples * System maintenance — supporting distribution, collection, and infrastructure upkeep * Utility service tasks — meter services, cross‑connection control, and residential supply support * Technical skill development — learning computer systems, safety procedures, and operational tools Training and responsibilities will increase as the successful candidate develops the required knowledge, skills, and competencies. The successful candidate must be willing and able to work rotational, non-standard hours, including shift work, nights, evenings, and weekends, as well as stand-by and callouts. Experience * Previous water or wastewater experience is not required; comprehensive training will be provided. * Trade and Secondary Education Equivalencies may be considered. * Related experience or education in water/wastewater, plant operations, trades, utilities, or technical fields is an asset. * Strong willingness to learn, reliability, and safety awareness are essential. The position includes physical demands, including but not limited to: a large number of stairs, tank cleaning, and the use of a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). Qualifications Required: * Grade 12 or equivalent * Valid Class 5 Saskatchewan driver’s license * Ability to obtain RCMP security clearance * Willingness to complete required safety and technical training (SCBA, First Aid, CPR, WHMIS, Confined Space, H2S Alive, etc.) Preferred (but not required): * Interest in water/wastewater treatment * Technical or trades background (millwright, plumbing, electrical, instrumentation) * Education in environmental science, engineering technology, or related fields Don't have water or wastewater experience? That's okay. This position is designed to provide you with the training and hands-on experience needed to develop into a skilled operator. If you are dependable, motivated, safety-focused, and willing to learn, the City of Yorkton will provide the training and support to help you build your career in water and wastewater treatment. Hours of Work: Monday to Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., with rotating weekend and on-call shifts. Hourly Range: $26.54 - $49.44 in accordance with CUPE Local #342 collective agreement and applicants’ qualification. This competition closes September 25, 2026.

Requirements

Applicants must have a Grade 12 education or equivalent and a valid Class 5 Saskatchewan driver's license. Candidates must be willing to work rotational shifts and obtain necessary safety certifications such as First Aid, CPR, and WHMIS.
