About the role Join CMHC’s Information Technology team, in the Bilingual Data Engineer position. You will design, build and support reliable data pipelines and reusable data assets on Azure and Databricks, helping teams use trusted data to support housing affordability for Canadians. As a Data Engineer, you will combine hands-on delivery with technical guidance, mentoring and continuous improvement of engineering practices.What you'll do: Design, build, test and document scalable data pipelines using Python, PySpark, SQL, Azure Databricks, Azure Data Factory and Azure SQL, integrating cloud and legacy sources, including DB2. Develop reusable, curated datasets and dimensional data models for analytics. Monitor pipeline health, data freshness and quality; provide second-level support and resolve incidents. Perform root cause analysis, implement lasting fixes and maintain runbooks, including safe restart and reprocessing procedures. Provide technical leadership through design and code reviews, mentoring and reusable engineering patterns. Where relevant review vendor deliverables for quality, maintainability and support readiness, and explain technical trade-offs to stakeholders. Optimize pipeline and query performance, scalability and cloud resource costs. Identify technical risks and improve engineering patterns within approved architecture, security and operational standards. Develop maintainable, reusable code and configuration using Git, peer review, automated tests and CI/CD. Follow controlled deployment practices across development, test and production environments. Understand stakeholder business requirements, enterprise architecture, policies, and standards to build data pipelines for long-term compatibility, scalability, and maintainability. Partner with CMHC business lines and collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders, including data architects, data stewards, data scientists, and enterprise architects, to deliver scalable data pipelines and products that support business objectives. What you should have: An undergraduate degree or a bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering or in a related field. A minimum of seven (7) years of IT experience in data engineering, analytics engineering, or related fields. A strong ability to program in Python using PySpark and SQL as demonstrated by your delivery of multiple data processing projects in production. Experience developing maintainable code using Git, peer review, automated testing and CI/CD, with controlled releases across environments. Experience working in a secure, structured, and controlled IT environment with separation of duties, adherence to policy and architecture. An extensive experience with processing large datasets from multiple sources using data engineering as well as ingesting data into data lakes and data warehouses. A hands-on experience building and operating data pipelines on Azure and Databricks, including orchestration and integration with relational data sources. Relevant Certification is an asset. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to clarify business needs, explain design choices to technical and business audiences, collaborate across teams and guide colleagues and delivery partners. It would be great if you also had: A master’s degree in a related field. Experience delivering shared data assets or semantic layers with consistent business definitions and reusable measures across analytics use cases. Experience automating cloud environment configuration and deployment through infrastructure as code. Experience building and operating data pipelines that prepare and deliver trusted data for AI and machine learning use cases, including retrieval-augmented generation (RAG).
