The Role As CURA's Mechanical Engineer, you own the physical hardware that makes our electrochemistry real. You will design the electrolyzer stacks and the fixtures, tooling, and test rigs around them, turning cell-level requirements into hardware that seals, holds compression, handles flow, and can actually be built and rebuilt as the design evolves. This role sits at the interface between our electrochemists and the machine shop, where a good mechanical decision is often the difference between a stack that runs for weeks and one that leaks on day one. As we move from lab cells toward our 30,000-tonne-per-year demonstration facility, you will be one of the people deciding how our core technology scales from a bench prototype into manufacturable industrial hardware. Key Responsibilities Design, Prototype & Build Develop mechanical designs for electrolyzer stacks, including flow plates, bipolar plates, end plates, manifolds, compression systems, sealing interfaces, and supporting hardware Create detailed 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, assemblies, and bills of materials (BOMs) to support prototype fabrication and testing Translate electrochemical and system-level requirements into practical mechanical designs that meet performance, reliability, and manufacturability objectives Perform mechanical design analysis, including tolerance stack-ups, sealing and compression analysis, material selection, structural considerations, and design-for-manufacturing (DFM) assessments to ensure reliable and manufacturable electrolyzer stack designs Collaborate with prototype technicians, engineers, and external manufacturing partners to support fabrication, assembly, troubleshooting, and rapid design iterations Design fixtures, tooling, and test hardware to support laboratory experiments, stack development, and pilot-scale validation Review prototype builds and test results to identify mechanical improvements and implement design enhancements. Support the development of scalable stack architectures by improving manufacturability, assembly processes, reliability, and cost Maintain engineering documentation, revision control, design standards, and technical records throughout the product development process Contribute mechanical engineering expertise to troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement of electrolyzer systems Other duties as required to achieve CURA’s milestones Safety & Documentation Must demonstrate attention to safe work practices Collaboration & Communication Must work well in a team setting and effectively collaborate across an interdisciplinary team Results oriented with strong interpersonal, and communication/presentation skills Effectively communicate outcomes and provide recommendations for further development to the management team Demonstrated aptitude for problem solving, troubleshooting, collaboration, and innovation Responsibly identify and manage IP, and communicate it to management, internal team members, and external stakeholders Leadership & External Relations Must be a self-starter and able to work independently or multiple competing priorities Manage relationships with external stakeholders, such as vendors, suppliers, and partners Excellent organizational, project, and time management capabilities Contribute to a culture of honesty, transparency, innovation, and safety Qualifications Required Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent hands-on design experience Three or more years of mechanical design experience taking hardware from concept through prototype and into fabrication Proficiency in 3D CAD (SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Creo, or similar), including assemblies, detailed drawings, and BOMs Working command of GD&T, tolerance stack-ups, and design-for-manufacturing principles Practical experience with material selection, sealing and compression, and fluid-handling design A hands-on approach that includes being in the lab or shop to see how designs perform and iterating quickly on what you learn Nice to Have Experience designing electrolyzers, fuel cells, flow batteries, or other electrochemical stacks Experience with gasket and seal design, bolted-joint or compression-loaded assemblies, and leak-tight fluidic systems FEA or CFD experience for structural, thermal, or flow analysis Familiarity with manufacturing processes such as CNC machining, sheet metal, molding, or additive manufacturing, and direct experience working with external fabrication partners Exposure to pilot-scale or industrial hardware scale-up P.Eng designation or eligibility for registration with APEGA (or a Canadian equivalent) Experience in a startup or other fast-moving, resource-constrained engineering environment What We Offer Competitive salary and early-stage equity stock options Generous vacation policy and a flexible, mission-driven culture A chance to make a measurable impact on global climate solutions Ownership of the mechanical design for a first-of-a-kind technology, with the latitude to make real engineering decisions rather than execute someone else's A close, technically deep team where your work moves from your screen to a running prototype in weeks, not quarters Additional Information Relocation will be considered for this position Compensation will be commensurate with education and experience The role requires 10% travel The successful candidate is required to provide proof of a valid driver’s license How To Apply We know great candidates don't always check every box, if you are excited about this role and CURA's mission, we would love to hear from you.
