Job summary
DSC is looking for an experienced PSR Engineer to join our team, based out of our Windsor office. This role is well suited to an engineer who enjoys being involved in both the technical and practical sides of industrial safety. You'll work directly with clients, equipment, and engineering teams to evaluate machinery and processes, identify potential hazards, and help ensure new and modified equipment is safe and compliant before it goes into production. The PSR Engineer will be responsible for conducting and documenting Pre-Start Health and Safety Reviews (PSRs) in accordance with the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and Ontario Regulation 851. What You'll Be Doing: Conduct Pre-Start Health and Safety Reviews in accordance with Ontario Regulation 851, Section 7 Determine when a PSR is required for new or modified equipment and processes Evaluate machinery, production lines, robotic systems, automated equipment, and manufacturing processes Conduct field inspections at industrial and manufacturing facilities Review machine guarding, safety devices, emergency stops, interlocks, safety circuits, and control systems Review safety PLC architecture and evaluate machine safety circuits Participate in equipment design reviews and identify potential hazards before installation Review vendor-supplied equipment and supporting engineering documentation Verify that equipment installations align with approved engineering drawings and specifications Observe equipment operation during commissioning and startup Identify deficiencies and recommend practical corrective actions Evaluate compliance with applicable CSA, ISO, IEC, ANSI, NFPA, ASTM, ASME, and other recognized engineering standards Perform engineering calculations as required, including safety distances, guard openings, stopping times, equipment loads, structural evaluations, pressure calculations, and safety factors Prepare clear and thorough PSR reports, risk assessments, hazard assessments, engineering review reports, corrective action reports, and compliance letters Sign and seal engineering documents where required and within the engineer's area of competence Maintain organized project documentation, engineering calculations, photographs, field notes, and supporting records Meet with clients to understand project scope, explain regulatory requirements, and present engineering findings Provide technical guidance as clients implement corrective actions Manage multiple PSR and machine-safety projects at various stages of completion What We're Looking For: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline 5+ years of relevant industrial engineering experience preferred Experience with industrial machinery, automation, controls, manufacturing equipment, or machine safety Experience with PSRs, machine-safety reviews, risk assessments, or regulatory engineering reviews is strongly preferred Ability to read and interpret electrical, mechanical, controls, and equipment drawings Proficiency with AutoCAD or similar CAD software Strong Microsoft Office skills Strong technical writing and documentation abilities Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills Clear and professional communication skills Strong attention to detail and sound engineering judgment Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities Comfortable working independently in the field as well as with multidisciplinary teams Technical Knowledge We're looking for someone with practical working knowledge of industrial safety and engineering standards, including several of the following: Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) Ontario Regulation 851 – Industrial Establishments Section 7 – Pre-Start Health and Safety Reviews CSA Z432 – Safeguarding of Machinery CSA Z434 – Industrial Robots and Robot Systems CSA Z460 – Control of Hazardous Energy CSA Z462 – Workplace Electrical Safety ISO 12100 – Risk Assessment and Risk Reduction ISO 13849 – Safety-Related Parts of Control Systems IEC 62061 – Functional Safety NFPA 70E ANSI B11 Series Machine guarding and safeguarding principles Industrial automation and control systems Safety PLCs, safety relays, and safety circuits Pneumatic and hydraulic safety Industrial electrical systems Functional safety and risk-assessment methodologies Professional Engineering Requirements Because this position involves engineering reviews and may include signing and sealing engineering documents, candidates must have the appropriate Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) licence or eligibility to practise professional engineering in Ontario, as required for the work being performed. Additional Requirements: Valid driver's licence Valid passport Ability and willingness to travel to client sites as required Comfortable performing field inspections in industrial and manufacturing environments Must meet applicable work authorization and client-site requirements Sponsorship is not available for this position Compensation: This position offers an hourly wage of $45.00–$55.00 per hour, based on the successful candidate’s experience, qualifications, and technical expertise.
