Job summary

The Laboratory Assistant provides support to the Medical Laboratory Technologists by carrying out central accessioning, pre analytical, and post analytical functions. Duties will include: Checking and entering all request forms and entering information for specimens received from specimen receiving, doctors offices, nursing homes, etc., as well as information for specimens collected in hospital by nursing until electronic ordering is implemented; Receiving and registering specimens for all laboratory areas, including chemistry, hematology, immunology, transfusion, histology and microbiology, and making sure all specimens are adequately identified; Generating bar code labels, sorting laboratory specimens and delivering sorted and labeled specimens to appropriate divisions in timely manner; Sorting and delivering printed laboratory reports within laboratory office and to appropriate mail slots in hospital doctors lounge; Greeting patients, ensuring accuracy of patients’ identification; Obtaining blood and other specimens from patients, including adults and children; Providing support to laboratory technologists with pre analytical and post analytical processing, including centrifugation and aliquoting specimens, preparing and staining slides, incubation of cultures, entering patient data, filing, etc.; Various histology duties including assisting with the gross dissection of anatomical pathology specimens, reagent and stain preparation, as well as formalin and xylene recycling; Accessioning anatomical pathology cases, filing histology slides, blocks and specimens and preparing specimens for disposal; Wash-up duties including cleaning glassware, autoclaving and disposing of specimens; Cleaning and maintaining equipment and processing areas, as well as maintaining supply inventories; Answering telephone inquiries, photocopying and faxing reports as required; Other duties as required. Minimum Qualifications: Must have successfully completed a laboratory assistant training program from a recognized educational institution Must be registered with CSMLS as a certified laboratory assistant Phlebotomy training and/or experience is an asset Must have a good previous work and attendance record Additional relevant education and experience will be considered an asset.
