Business Continuity & Emergency Planners (BC&EM) act in critical roles during local, regional, or inter-provincial incidents, events, or emergencies including as the representative in the Emergency Operations Centre for the business unit in emergency management and business continuity roles, or Tactical Operations Centre Manager. BC&EM Planners are required to develop strategic business continuity and emergency management plans that comply with City of Calgary policies, follow professional standards, which allows for effective collaboration within Business Units and across the Corporation, as well as external to The City. BC&EM Planners are responsible for developing and actioning plans and projects that support business continuity and emergency management initiatives at the Operational Services (OS) department level such as the OS Department Business Continuity Plan. Major duties include:
- Develop, influence, and provide subject matter expert advice pertaining to the department business continuity and emergency management program frameworks for organizational activities aligned to the CSA Z1600 Emergency Management and Continuity Standard (national standard for emergency management and business continuity). This includes developing and guiding strategic and operational activities in risk identification and assessment, identifying business impacts, mitigation of risks and impacts, contingency planning, emergency management and business continuity training and emergency exercise design and facilitation, as well as the establishment of each BU Tactical Operations Centre.
- Conduct ongoing environmental scans, collect, and analyze information from different sources to identify, evaluate, monitor trends, and mitigate emerging threats. Evaluate critical infrastructure risks and needs as set out in the Federal National Strategy and Action Plans, as well as Provincial and Municipal guidance for critical infrastructure.
- Support employees through mentorship, coaching, and performance development for appropriate decision making and judgement during business disruptions and in TOCs and the EOC. This is accomplished through regular training and exercises during mitigation.
Qualifications
- Degree in disciplines such as Disaster & Emergency Management, Crisis or Risk Management, Public Safety, or related discipline.
- At least 5 years of related experience is required.
- Education and experience in exercise and training design and delivery, group facilitation and project management is desired.
- Project management or courses in exercise design and facilitation are required to be able to design and facilitate exercises.
- Strong relationship-development skills, with experience coordinating complex networks.

Workstyle
- This position may be eligible to work from home for at least part of the time as one of several flexible work options available to City employees. These arrangements depend on the operational requirements of the role, employee suitability, and are subject to change based on operational needs and corporate direction.
Position and Pay Information

- Position Type: 1 Permanent and 2 Temporary (up to 18 months)
- Compensation: Pay Grade 13 $50.92 - 68.15 per hour
- Hours of work: Standard 35 hour work week.
- Days of work: This position works a 5-day work week with 1 day off in a 3 week cycle.
