About Olds College of Agriculture & Technology
Founded in 1913, Olds College of Agriculture & Technology has been offering high quality hands-on education for over a century. Purpose of Position:
This position is covered by the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) Collective Agreement Job Classification: Service Worker III
The Smart Farm Service worker reports to the Operations Supervisor and their primary responsibility will be to assist in the daily operation & management of the Farm and ensure that all duties are performed in a safe, effective and efficient manner. The Olds College Smart Farm is a world class teaching and research farm with a focus on cropping, livestock, and equine production in Alberta.
Key Job Functions:
Animal Care
- Complete feeding and bedding requirements daily.
- Monitor animal health and perform treatments as required.
- Preparation and movement of cattle and sheep for student labs.
- Maintain production and treatment records on electronic databases.
- Work with Farm Supervisor to develop feeding and processing procedures.
- Monitor pasture conditions and rotate livestock as needed.
- Other duties as assigned
Crops
- Work with Assistant Farm Manager or team lead and vendors to schedule delivery and pick-up of cropping inputs.
- Work with Assistant Farm Manager or team lead and contractors to coordinate harvesting and storage of grains and forages.[1]
Equipment
- Operate farm equipment in the field as well as around farmyard (tractor, seeder, sprayer, combine, bale shredder, feed truck, skid steer, loader, stock trailer, etc).
- Drive and operate vehicles requiring Class 3 operator’s license and/or Q endorsement (air brakes).
- Perform general facility and equipment maintenance.
Health & Safety
- Adhere to all College health and safety protocols, including WHMIS, PPE use, and documented procedures.
- Participate in safety meetings, drills, and required training to support a safety-first workplace culture.
- Maintain tools and equipment in safe operating condition.
- Keep current records and updated training certification as needed.
Additional Responsibilities
- Assist with OCCI Projects.
- Check and repair existing fences and new fence construction.
- To foster a culture of integrity, safety, respect, and responsibility.
Education/Experience/Skills/Knowledge Required:
- High School Diploma plus additional coursework preferred.
- Minimum of 2 years of related work experience on a farm and crop operation.
- Ability to legally drive and operate farm vehicles requiring Class 3 operator’s license and/or Air brake endorsement.
- Willing to work some holidays and weekends.
- High standards and excellent work ethic.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Ability to stand and bend for extended periods of time and lift 50+ lbs.
- Concern and care about the animals general well-being.
- Acts ethically, openly, honestly, and respectfully to build and maintain an environment of trust, safety, and well-being.
