About the role
Job Title: Principal Automation Engineer (Kubernetes / IaC).
Job Type: 1-year contract
Location: Toronto, ON (downtown). Hybrid, 3 days onsite if based out of Ontario.
Shift Schedule: Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM
Hours per week: 40 Rate: $90/hr T4 OR $110/hr Inc.
Role Summary
Our client is seeking a Principal Automation Engineer, to serve as the strategic lead for infrastructure automation, driving the transition toward a "Platform Engineering" model. You will define the enterprise roadmap for Infrastructure as Code (IaC), leveraging Ansible and Terraform to build standardized, self-service pipelines across hybrid-cloud environments (on-premise, AWS, and OpenShift). Beyond technical execution, you will provide architectural governance, establishing automated guardrails for security and compliance while eliminating manual bottlenecks in provisioning. You will act as a high-level consultant to Global Technology Services (GTS), mentoring engineering teams and evangelizing a culture of automation. Your leadership will be pivotal in transforming
Key Responsibilities
Lead the design, implementation, and evolution of our client's enterprise Infrastructure as Code (IaC) strategy. Develop and maintain standardized automation frameworks using Terraform, Ansible, and modern DevOps practices. Architect scalable automation solutions across hybrid environments including AWS, VMware vSphere, OpenShift/Kubernetes, and On-premises infrastructure Design and implement reusable automation modules, templates, and standardized "Golden Pipelines." Build self-service infrastructure capabilities that improve provisioning speed and consistency across engineering teams. Champion Platform Engineering principles throughout the organization. Establish automation governance, architectural standards, and best practices. Embed security, compliance, and operational controls into deployment pipelines through Policy-as-Code methodologies. Provide technical leadership and mentorship to automation engineers and cross-functional engineering teams. Promote CI/CD best practices, Git workflows, modular code development, and automation standards. Collaborate with infrastructure, cloud, networking, security, and application teams to deliver integrated automation solutions. Lead large-scale infrastructure modernization and transformation initiatives. Evaluate emerging DevOps and automation technologies while driving continuous improvement across the automation ecosystem. Develop documentation, automation libraries, architectural patterns, and engineering standards for enterprise-wide adoption. Support recruitment, onboarding, and coaching of automation engineering talent while helping establish a Center of Excellence for Infrastructure Automation.
Required Skills & Experience
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline (Master's degree is considered an asset), or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience. 10+ years of experience in Infrastructure Engineering, Platform Engineering, Systems Engineering, Cloud Engineering, Software Architecture, or Infrastructure Automation. Demonstrated experience designing and implementing enterprise-scale Infrastructure as Code (IaC) solutions. Extensive hands-on experience with Terraform and Ansible for automating complex hybrid cloud environments, including AWS, VMware vSphere, OpenShift/Kubernetes, and on-premises infrastructure. Proven experience leading large-scale infrastructure modernization, migration, or transformation initiatives using automated toolsets. Strong knowledge of Platform Engineering, DevOps methodologies, CI/CD pipelines, Git version control, and automation best practices. Experience designing reusable automation frameworks, self-service infrastructure platforms, standardized deployment pipelines, and modular Infrastructure as Code. Advanced scripting and programming skills using Python, Go, or Bash. Deep understanding of cloud infrastructure, APIs, and infrastructure automation across hybrid environments. Experience integrating security, governance, and compliance into automation workflows using Policy-as-Code principles. Proven ability to mentor technical teams, establish engineering standards, and provide architectural leadership across cross-functional initiatives. Excellent analytical, problem-solving, communication, and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence technical teams and senior leadership.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with Kubernetes or OpenShift administration and automation. Experience implementing Policy-as-Code solutions using tools such as Open Policy Agent (OPA) or HashiCorp Sentinel. Experience automating enterprise networking technologies, including AWS networking, Cisco ACI, or F5 BIG-IP. Experience with enterprise CI/CD platforms such as GitLab CI, GitHub Actions, or Jenkins. Experience with secrets management solutions such as HashiCorp Vault, CyberArk, or AWS Secrets Manager. Knowledge of Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) principles, configuration drift management, and infrastructure observability. Experience working within highly regulated financial services environments. Experience with cloud financial management (FinOps) and cloud cost optimization. Professional certifications such as HashiCorp Terraform Associate/Professional, Red Hat Certified Specialist in Ansible Automation, AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Professional, Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA), or other relevant cloud and infrastructure certifications.
