We are seeking a skilled and motivated Research Assistant with experience in 3D modeling and rapid prototyping to support an ongoing design research project. The ideal candidate will contribute to the development of physical prototypes and digital models using CNC machining and 3D printing technologies. This role involves translating conceptual designs into functional prototypes, supporting iterative design processes, and assisting in the fabrication of components for experimental and research-based outcomes. The student will work closely with the research team to refine designs, test materials, and produce high-quality outputs for presentation and evaluation.
TYPICALDUTIESAND RESPONSIBILITIES**:**
- Develop 3D models for prototyping using appropriate software tools
- Prepare files for fabrication using CNC machines and 3D printers
- Operate and assist in the use of CNC machining equipment and 3D printing technologies
- Support rapid prototyping processes, including material selection and testing
- Assist in assembling and refining physical prototypes
- Collaborate with the research team to iterate on design concepts
- Maintain organized documentation of design iterations and fabrication processes
- Ensure safe and proper use of equipment in accordance with lab protocols
- Participate in team meetings and provide updates on progress
Position Requirements
- Experience with 3D modeling software (e.g., Rhino, Fusion 360, SolidWorks, or similar)
- Familiarity with CNC machining processes and/or 3D printing workflows
- Understanding of rapid prototyping methods and materials
- Ability to translate design concepts into physical prototypes
- Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively
- Experience working in a fabrication lab or maker space is considered an asset
- Basic knowledge of design for manufacturing principles is an asset
Physical Demands Pay Grade As Per CUPE 2419 Salary Range As per CUPE 2419 Status Casual Work Hours
Hours: Up to 8-12 hrs/week
