Job Description
Job Summary
Reporting to the Environmental Services Manager, the Environmental Services Supervisor is a key member of the facility’s management team, responsible for ensuring a clean, safe, and sanitary environment for residents, staff and visitors. This role is responsible for supervising all aspects of environmental services by providing quality housekeeping and laundry services in the seven (7) Long Term Care Homes while ensuring compliance with Ministry, legislative, and corporate expectations.
Education
- Degree or Diploma in environmental health, public health, healthcare administration, or a related field.
- Certification and member of CHHA member (Canadian Healthcare Housekeepers’ Association) or OHHA (Ontario Healthcare Housekeepers Association).
- Completion of technical courses related to institutional, housekeeping, and linen management is preferred.
Knowledge
- At least 3 years of current related experience in a Long-Term Care Home
- At least 3 years of current related experience in environmental services management, preferably in a healthcare or long-term care setting
- Knowledge of regulatory requirements related to environmental services in healthcare facilities
- Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively supervise and motivate staff.
- Excellent organizational and problem-solving abilities.
- Proficient in computer applications, such a Microsoft Office Suites and facility management software.
- Knowledge of electronic documentation software
- Knowledge of the Ministry of Health and Fixing Long Term Care Act; Occupational Health and Safety Act; and the Accreditation Process
Special Requirements
- In accordance with the Corporate Criminal Record Check Policy, the position requires the incumbent to undergo a Criminal Records Check and submit a Canadian Police Clearance Certificate for the vulnerable sector.
- This position requires the incumbent to undergo and pass a Tuberculosis screen as required by the corporation.
- This position must maintain the ability to travel in a timely manner to other offices, work locations, or sites as authorized by the Corporation for business reasons.

Responsibilities
Ensures effective environmental building management, quality processes, policies and practices are in place, implemented and adhered to. Implements policies and procedures relevant to Environmental Services, as well as policies relating to Infection Control and Safety (25% of time)
- Establishes and maintains all housekeeping and laundry activities and infection control measures that are consistent across all homes, gathering data, outlining instructions for everyday use in the field and monitoring activities for compliance.
- Develops and recommends performance standards, policies and procedures for the homes and maintenance of Seniors Division facilities and equipment.
- Establishes processes and ensures the cleaning and sanitation of resident’s rooms, common areas and other areas of the facility according to establishes protocols and standards.
- Monitors the use of chemicals and equipment to ensure proper procedures are followed and safety guidelines are adhered to.
- Implement infection control protocols and procedures to prevent the spread of infections within the LTC homes.
- Collaborate with the IPAC Managers to identify and address potential infection control issues.
- Oversees all housekeeping and laundry department related issues across all LTC Homes.
- Establish processes for ordering, inventory management, distribution, and appropriate and safe use of supplies and equipment for EVS.
Adherence to legislation/policies and procedures (15% of time)**:
- Ensure compliance with all applicable regulations, standards and guidelines related to environmental services including those set forth by regulatory agencies and accrediting bodies including the Fixing Long Term Care Act and other relevant legislations.
- Implement policies, procedures, and protocols to support regulatory compliance and best practices in environmental care.
- Ensures the safety and quality of service provision, adherence to policies and procedures, and the effectiveness of systems and processes.
- Monitor risk management related activities to optimize resident safety and mitigate risk related to training, physical plant, equipment, systems and processes, regulations, and legislation.
- Ensures compliance in clinical documentation and care planning procedures and various applicable college standards.
Quality Assurance and Risk Management (15% of time)
- Monitor quality assurance programs to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of environmental services, including cleanliness, infection control and safety.
- Investigate complaints, incidents and outbreaks related to environmental issues and develop and implement corrective action to prevent recurrence.
- Collaborate with the interdisciplinary teams at the seven Niagara Region Long Term Care Homes, such as nursing, IPAC, and maintenance to address environmental concerns and mitigate risks to residents, staff and visitors.
- Ensure that cleaning and laundry equipment and supplies are properly maintained, stocked, and available for use by the environmental services staff.
- Establish inventory levels and ordering levels to ensure uninterrupted service delivery.
Training and Education (10% of time)
- Provide training and ongoing education to environmental services staff on cleaning techniques, infection control practices, safety protocols and regulatory requirements.
- Keep abreast of industry trends, best practices, and emerging technologies in environmental services and incorporate new knowledge into departmental practices and training programs.
Supervises staff, coordinating and planning work, providing work direction, assigning tasks and projects, determining methods and procedures to be used, monitoring quality of work, resolving problems and ensuring assigned results are achieved. (25% of time).
- Enables results with the organization’s human capital strategy to foster employee engagement.
- In conjunction with the Manager provides training and development, coaching and discipline when necessary, and manages staff recruitment.
- Ensures focus is service excellence, communication/transparency, innovation, and data integrity and work flow integration.
- Ensures staff has the information and resources to make successful plans and decisions.
- Ensures all people related issues, including recruitment, grievances, and labour relations issues, are aligned to HR and Corporate standards and practices.
- Helps to break down barriers to employee success, ensuring collaboration and cooperation with other teams within their division and department.
- Ensures Occupational Health & Safety policies, programs and practices are implemented, and maintained. This includes workplace inspections, monitoring, accident reporting and investigations, and ensuring any observed hazards or lapses in the functioning of OH&S processes, and other OH&S concerns are responded to promptly.
- Ensures all individuals under supervision have been informed of hazards and instructed on the necessary risk control and emergency response measures.
Manages and administers annual and multi-year Capital and Operating budgets for which they are delegated authority ensuring support of Council’s objectives, financial transparency, and accountability, monitoring budget adherence, identifying and explaining variances, and financial reporting is effectively managed in compliance with corporate financial policies. Administer and approve the acquisition of goods and services for their direct reports in accordance with the procurement policy. (10% of time)
