Job details

Remote U.S. or Canada (under 25% travel) About the Opportunity A rapidly expanding engineering and advisory organization focused on electric transmission infrastructure is seeking a senior technical leader to support large-scale grid modernization, transmission development, and interconnection initiatives across North America. The organization works with utilities, transmission owners, developers, system operators, engineering firms, and infrastructure stakeholders on projects involving high-voltage transmission, grid integration, and emerging energy technologies. This position offers the opportunity to take a leading role in the technical development of complex transmission infrastructure projects while influencing engineering strategy, commercial competitiveness, and long-term project success. Position Overview The Power Systems Technical Lead will provide technical direction for high-voltage transmission projects, including converter stations, substations, and related grid infrastructure. The role combines deep engineering expertise with strategic project support, helping evaluate technical solutions, challenge contractor assumptions, assess project risks, and guide infrastructure development decisions. The successful candidate will collaborate with developers, utilities, transmission organizations, consultants, contractors, equipment manufacturers, and other stakeholders to ensure projects are technically sound, commercially viable, and aligned with broader development objectives. Key Responsibilities Lead technical development activities for HVDC and high-voltage AC transmission facilities. Support transmission project development efforts, competitive solicitations, utility procurements, and strategic infrastructure initiatives. Develop and review system architectures, technical specifications, design criteria, equipment strategies, and engineering documentation. Evaluate and challenge engineering deliverables produced by consultants, contractors, and equipment vendors. Assess technical alternatives with consideration for reliability, constructability, schedule impacts, permitting challenges, lifecycle costs, and operational performance. Coordinate integration requirements between new transmission facilities and existing grid infrastructure. Support procurement activities including scope development, technical evaluations, design reviews, and bidder assessments. Translate interconnection requirements, technical studies, and regulatory obligations into practical engineering recommendations. Identify and manage engineering risks associated with design maturity, equipment selection, commissioning, operations, compliance, cost, and schedule. Contribute to organizational growth through technical leadership, industry engagement, and development of internal expertise. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related technical discipline. Approximately 8+ years of relevant experience supporting transmission, substation, HVDC, or power systems projects. Strong understanding of HVDC converter stations, high-voltage substations, transmission infrastructure, and grid integration requirements. Experience with Voltage Source Converter (VSC) HVDC technology. Background supporting design, specification development, procurement, construction, commissioning, testing, operations, or technical review activities for transmission infrastructure projects. Solid understanding of protection and control systems, primary substation equipment, technical interfaces, reliability considerations, and operational requirements. Experience collaborating with utilities, transmission owners, system operators, developers, engineering firms, or equipment suppliers. Ability to connect engineering decisions with project execution, commercial considerations, regulatory requirements, and risk management. Strong communication skills with the ability to engage both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Willingness to travel as required. Preferred Qualifications Advanced degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or a related field. Experience navigating North American transmission planning, interconnection, reliability, and market processes. Familiarity with utility standards, transmission regulations, and industry engineering guidelines applicable to high-voltage infrastructure. Experience supporting long-distance transmission, offshore generation integration, FACTS projects, converter station development, or other complex grid infrastructure programs. Professional Engineer (P.Eng. or PE) license or progress toward licensure. What Sets This Opportunity Apart High level of technical ownership and influence. Ability to shape major transmission and grid modernization projects. Exposure to both North American and international infrastructure initiatives. Opportunity to work alongside recognized industry experts in power systems and transmission engineering. Strong career growth trajectory within a rapidly expanding organization focused on energy transition and grid reliability.
