Makivvik Corporation is supporting the development of a new trauma-informed, culturally safe, Inuit-specific shelter for women and children fleeing domestic violence. Located in central Montreal, the shelter aims to address critical gaps faced by Inuit individuals in accessing safe and stable housing during times of crisis. The shelter will provide wraparound services with a strong focus on safety, healing, and reconnection to culture and community. As part of this initiative, a new non-profit organization may be established to oversee the shelter and future urban-based services. Please note that employees of the shelter may become a part of this newly created entity under Makivvik. Reports to: The Shelter Director Location: Montréal - Shelter for Inuit women and children Status of Employment: Full-time / Part-time (Shift-based, 24/7 operations) Responsibilities Client Support & Safety Conduct intake procedures and support initial safety planning Monitor safety within the shelter and respond to crises as they arise Provide emotional support and practical assistance to residents Support residents in accessing appointments, resources, and referrals Maintain clear and professional boundaries Support for Children Support children’s safety, routines and structured activities Monitor child well-being and report concerns to the social worker Assist mothers in supporting their children’s needs Daily Shelter Operations Maintain a safe, welcoming and structured living environment Support meal coordination and shared living responsibilities Complete shift logs, incident reports and case notes Participate in shift handovers and team meetings Collaboration & Cultural Environment Work closely with the cultural Liaison to support cultural activities Promote culturally respectful interactions within the shelter Professional conduct Adhere to confidentiality policies and ethical standards Engage in ongoing professional development Qualifications Diploma or degree in social work, social services, community intervention or related field (preferred) Equivalent work or lived experience and relevant training considered Understanding of trauma-informed practices Ability to respond calmly and effectively in crisis situations Knowledge of crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques Experience working with women and children impacted by violence preferred Experience in social services, shelters, crisis centres or community-based setting preferred Cultural awareness and willingness to work within an Inuit-specific framework Strong interpersonal and boundary-setting skills Ability to work independently and as part of a 24/7 team Experience working with children is an asset Basic computer proficiency Inuktitut considered a strong asset Security clearance is required.
